oil pan bolts
Well, the DIY'er did this time. I have replaced the oil pan gasket on my 83' cd. Should have known it would be the last bolt to tighten up. SNAP
![]() Ok, what is the course of action I should take? Can this bolt be drilled out? I have heard of an Easy Out (not sure of the spelling), to remove broken bolts, but I'm no sure of what it is. Or, does this need to be taken to auto machine shop to be removed? By the way, I have a Haynes manual for the 123 models. Its suggests the torque on oil pan bolts is 40 Nm. This is a misprint, right? Earlier posts in this forum suggested 7-10 Nm. Any help is appreciated. Thanks..... Marks88 |

Yes, the Haynes manual is way off. I used the foot-pound spec listed rather than the Nm, but realized it was off when one of the bolts spun through the threads. My bolt didn't break off. The thing that really pissed me off is that I've been doing mechanical work long enough that I should have questioned the torque spec rather than just blindly follow what was printed - As if tech manuals are infallible.
As far as your getting the broken bolt out, you should probably remove the pan and check to see if there's enough of the bolt exposed to just get a pair of vice-grips on it to twist it out. If that doesn't work, the easy-out is your next step. If the bolt was soft enough to snap off like that, it shouldn't be too tough to drill through to insert the easy-out. Hopefully you'll be able to save the threads in the block. I just tightened mine up as much as possible and deal with the minor leaks. I've got far too much other work to do on my car before I'll mess with re-tapping the threads.
