Failed inspection - ABS and SRS lights never light up

Folks,

Brought the (new to me) '92 300D in to get it inspected and the car failed due to the ABS and SRS lights NOT lighting up when key is turned. All other lights come on (and then off when the car starts).

Sure would like to think it's just two bulbs burnt out - but I suspect it's more than that.

I don't know the history of the car. I've only owned it for a few weeks.

Any thoughts?

-John

Are the fuses present and not blown?

Yes - I've checked all fuses and they look good. Doesn't seem to be a fuse issue.

since when must abs and srs work to pass inspection?

On my 91 BMW I rebuilt the ABS (bosch shops can get fault codes for these old cars), but cut the wire to the srs bulb as the endeavour was too proprietary, too expensive, and I wasnt about to change airbags out.

Neither ever caused an issue with safety inspection in DE or NJ.

Yes, check that there are good bulbs in place. No point speculating on a potential non-issue.

And don't just look at the fuses. Remove each one to make sure the ends aren't corroded and there isn't a hairline crack in a conductor somewhere.

I'm amazed that an inspector would even know, for all the various makes and models, which bulbs are supposed to light up in which switch position. They must have one hell of a reference book. I suppose it's that Trantorian love of government.

Just parallel the lights with the ignition light, they will come on with the ignition & go out when it starts. Or wire them with a timer.

Might need to try a different inspection station if that option is available to you.

Did they catch the warning lights by observation or through an OBD scan?
