om 603 oil pan question

hello,
i may be getting a 1987 300sdl that needs an oil pan. will a pan from a 603 from a w124 300d work or is the w126 pan different?

Same pan. Even the pan from a 90-91 350SD/L will work but it won't have the side sump.

Yes, oil pans are interchangeable (w124 <-> w126).

Just curious, are there advantages to the side pump? Why did they change the design?

Side sump. There's a detachable compartment on the starboard side of the oil pan. I don't know why MB made it that way then changed it. I suppose they designed around a crossmember limitation in an existing application then decided later on to go conventional.
