85 300TD Euro starving for fuel part 2
First thread got a little off track. So here is a condensed version.
Basically, car is running out of fuel. Stop let it idle for a bit and it will run again for a few minutes at 55 then just loose all power. I mean can hold the peddle to the floor and the car will only want to idle. pull over let it idle for a minute take off again and repeat. So far here are the things I have tried. 1. Pulled the Tank strainer - Clean (this also resulted in my replacing all the fuel in the tank with new, from my normal station) 2. Checked the primary filter - Clean 3. Ordered a secondary filter (will be in in the AM) But current one is new. 4. plumbed a Carter fuel pump in line before the primary filter. Ran the carter for a second into a bottle, Absolutely no fuel restriction from tank... the flow was strong. Drove the car 40 miles. (To pickup my spare IP) Could still feel it stumble like it was not getting enough fuel, but it kept a steady 55. Took the fuel pump back off to continue testing. Going up a mountain... car dropped to 10 mph and stayed there. (with the carter on) night before last, it did 3mph up another mountain on it's way home without it) 5. replaced the bolt on the back side of the IP (the one with the spring in it) with a known good one from my 120k mile 85 IP. No change. 6. replaced the Lift pump with a known good one off same good Parts IP. No change. Tested the turbo, it's pushing 8psi at wot. And you can hear it working again. Oh, and I have tested for tank vacuum, none. Tried driving with cap off, no change. Can't find the vent everyones talking about but does not seem to be the issue since there is no difference with the cap off... Should also make note that I replaced the air filter as well. Next? |

Have you looked over all the throttle linkages? You could have some bad pivot points causing loss of pedal motion. Have someone push the pedal down a few times while you watch, and make sure the linkage at the IP is going through it's full motion.
When you're experiencing the starvation, will it still do it when the car it parked and you press the throttle. If not you may have dragging brakes or something of that nature. Have you replaced the air filter? A really clogged air filter will cause starvation issues as well. You might also check the spring in the fuel pressure relief valve on the IP. -Fuel injection pump starvation with a good lift pump -Fuel pressure relief valve adjustment

I replaced the fuel pressure relief valve with another from my known good IP. 85's have a sealed one that you can not adjust, only replace. Brakes seem fine, the car will coast with no noticeable drag. Have a new secondary filter coming in the morning. Will swap it out, it right now is the only other thing I can think of, and even though is not old, maybe some junk got in there.. At least I'll know all the filter are new by my hands at that point. The fact that, even though the carter fuel pump was able to keep the car running with a light stumble, there is something restricting the flow. That pump should be able to run the car by itself even without a lift pump and the only piece still in the flow is that secondary filter.... I'm tempted to cut the filter open and see whats in it after. |

8 psi is low for WOT. Should be around 11. Still, it should go faster than 5 mph up a hill. I know you changed pressure relief valve but have you measured actual IP internal fuel pressure?
Did it run on WVO?

I would say no to the wvo. The guy that owned it was a retired guy living in a motor home with his wife (nice motor home) And with the stack of receipts that came with it, it just does not seem like it would have been abused like that. |

Use your fingers and pinch the center of the cigar hose closed at idle and tell us what you find.

Pull the brown vacuum line off the shut off valve, drive it and see if it makes a difference.

Partial vac to the shut-off valve will cause fuel starvation, but partially actuating the shut-off valve.

FIXED!
So I went and put the new spin on filter in place, also went ahead and replaced the primary, Even though they where both new (within last 30 days) That solved it. Car runs great now. Noticed the diesel in the filters had a blueish tint, but in new filter fuel is nice and yellow. Someone had talked before about a seal in the lift pump going out and letting oil mix with the fuel... I think something like that was going on as well. So I feel good about replacing the lift pump. |
