Question 240D caliper piston orientation

I am rebuilding the calipers on my 81 240D - ATE type. The rear pistons have a small indentation - does it matter where this is placed on re-assembly?

One side of the caliper has 2 holes for fluid - the other has 3.

Also, what is the correct orientation for the half moon cutouts on the top of the pistons where they meet the pads? They came off the car with the half moon vertical, oriented to the back of the car.

Thanks for the help!

Please change your brake fluid every year. The previous owner of my 240 was not so inclined.

Thought I would answer my own question for the benefit of others who may attempt this repair in the future. It is in the Haynes manual and on the instructions that came with the repair kit.

Then orientation of the half moon cutouts should be at approximately a 20 degree angle pointing up towards the rear of the car. When installing the shims on the front pistions, you are forced to align them properly so that the anti-rattle clip at the top will fit the shim. When you look at the shim, the angle and orientation will be more clear.

Imagine you are looking at the caliper on the car. Imagine that the half moon cutout is horizontal, with the cutout at the bottom of the caliper towards the spindle. If you are on the driver's side, rotate the piston counter clockwise 20 degrees. On the passenger side - it's clockwise.

Hope this helps. On to final assembly and bleeding tonight!
