Save my 81 300SD - for sale

My transmission took out last night and I had the car towed to LaGrange, GA. It has been such a good car for me that I wonder if someone would like to buy it and put in another transmission. Engine really runs great, AC works, and overall it is in really good shape.

About 258K miles. It is my daily driver and I am the first owner with records back to 1984.

$500 to cover these costs - to be picked up at the towing company.

Hate to see it go to the junkyard. Pic attached.

Just realized it would be a great parts car too.

Well, I cannot figure out how to show the picture again. It keeps telling me that I have already posted this picture in a thread "I Looked At An 81 SD" and it will not let me post it here. If you are interested to see what good shape the car is in, please look at my post in the thread "I Looked At An 81 SD."

Or can someone help me figure out how to show it here again.

Finally figured it out. Picture should be attached now.

That car is too nice to send to the junk yard, someone will buy it.

Sorry to hear of your troubles - if I lived closer I'd have picked it up by now!

How difficult is it to throw in a transmission? With decent mechanical skills, of course.

Should not be too difficult to slide in another transmission. However the tow company quoted me $1300 for an installed used tranny. Sounds a bit much to me.

But that's all the car needs. And I have used it as a daily driver since 1984.

If I weren't in south Texas I would've picked the car up an hour after you posted!

It is at the tow company lot in LaGrange, GA, about an hour south of Atlanta.

I ran it out of fluid. The tow company guy put in 5.5 quarts of tranny fluid and drove it around the block. Said it would not shift out of low and sounded really bad. Said it needed to be replaced.

I think I'd want another opinion on that puppy before I wrote it off. There is a top-notch benz mechanic near Atlanta. It "might" be worth a call to him. Look for Blue Ridge MB, Jonathon Hodgman. He frequents the 126 forum on the "other" forum...

Edit: how did you run it out of fluid? was it leaking, or did a hose blow?

Yes. Take it to Jono
http://www.blueridgemb.com/

He is top notch. See what he has to say about it. It could be just the B2 piston. When it went in my SD it refused to shift out of low gears as well. IIRC reverse worked perfectly fine though. I THINK. New b2 piston fixed it 100%. Im not sure of the fluid loss. It could be a simple B2 piston or a burn out front pump due to lack of fluid. Either way worth having someone with more Mercedes specific experience take a look at. Mercedes transmissions get mis-diagnosed quite often.

$1300 does seem a bit high. I paid $1300 to have the engine and transmission removed from my 190E, a 3.0L m103 installed and mated to the transmission. Included price of a used motor shipped to the shop as well.

Why are all the nice cars so far away? Would make a nice rust free replacement.

Guys - Jonathan Hodgman of Blue Ridge MB has agreed to buy the car and put it back on the road if I do not get the tranny fixed. I am trying to decide whether to go with a used tranny.

In any event we seem to have saved it from the crusher and that was my biggest concern.

Thanks for all the help and comments out there. Great forum again.
