The early pumps aren't caged, the later ones are. My understanding is once you go to the later style you're ready to rock. As the bearing wears on the caged unit it can't fall out like they do on the early pumps.

Just to complicate things, I have a late pump in my shop with Torx screws on the front, but it's completely lacking the caged bearing. You really need to pull the pump and complete a visual inspection of both the pump and timer ramp in order to determine where you stand.

auspumpen, can you share the markings on the port side of the pump? Does it have a distinct MB star or has it been ground off? What's the date code on the lower front of the pump?

Thanks,

It's a Pierburg and does appear to have the star and other markings ground off. From what I gather, this is the date stamp -- 92T 099. It's ink stamped on the front cover with -- 603 230 01 65. This was pulled from a '90 300D w/185k at the time. I'm assuming the pump was replaced sometime within about 2 to 4 years of the original point of sale, if the pump was made in '92.

Argg

It is back...
Owner changed the oil filter, and trapped the cover seal ring in the lid = 2 quart oil spill.

The engine oil pressure is zero on the instrument cluster.

I pulled the oil pressure sensor.
Attached a mechanical gauge, zero oil pressure.
Tried two other gauges with the same results.

Removed the gauge, and cranked the engine, nothing came out of the pipe.

Pulling the engine to find out what happened.

I'm going to pretend I didn't just read that.

Looks like I'll be swapping in an electric vac pump sooner than I thought.
