Do Old MB Mufflers Thump?

As far as I know my 82 muffler is original, but it gives out a light Thumping noise when U just start increasing speed, say in the 5-25 MPH range. U can hear it from behind the driver. Once up to speed it is quiet.

I removed the pair in middle and straight piped that part.

Only one left is at rear. Thanks!

Strange German Steel to last this long. No holes anywhere just internal Thumping.

Might it be the exhaust pipe that connects the transmission and differential? That might be a carrier bearing or mount failing.

Funnie,

I know my rubber hangers aren't bad cause I have 4 tie wraps per side...lol

And they are carefully adjusted as not to cause any problems, ie bumping.

The Thumping noise isn't it hitting anything it is an internal noise that U can only hear inside the vehicle.

I know I need a new one but just haven't gotten one.

Phil sent me square ones before instead of the donuts.

Discs look great and axles look good too. No wear or slop any where. Was under there yesterday. Noise as far as I can tell is from inside rear muffler but only at start up. Thanks neighbor!

Sounds (OK, reads) like the failed center bearing carrier on my W123.
