Car shipping advice?

I am considering purchasing another 220d from another forum member, but they are not located near me. Given my current schedule and vehicle condition, it is not likely that I can fly to their location and then drive the car home. So I am trying to learn about the process of shipping a car via a vehicle transport company.

If you have any experience with this, could you share any advice you might have for a successful transfer? Prices appear to be around $900 for an open truck or $1300 for a closed truck. Am I missing an easier/cheaper way to move a car from TX to CA? Thanks for your help.

My 1987 300TD wagon was sold and my 2003 W210 E320 wagon was totaled (sheds tear).
