W210 fixed! Steering groaning, now to fix steering creaking.

Well that was easy. Just a bit low on fluid and pump was complaining, more fluid = no groaning... DUH.

Now I have to find out what is making the car sound like an old creaky door from a haunted house when low-speed steering in the parking lot is performed. I can only hear the creaking when steering, at very low speed, with the window down.

I so not hear this creak with the windows up, and it occurs whether the car is running or off. Also when moving or stationary.

The creaking is consistant, reguardless of steering angle, and sounds as if it is coming from the driver's side of the car.

I can identify the polyurethane bushing squeak when pushing on the fenders to work the suspension. I can also hear the higher frequency squeak of the sway bar links when driving with the windows down.... so this is a third squeaky/creaky sound being emitted from the car...

Check the ball joint boots for tears / rust coming out. Rust inside the joint will cause the noise. Don't let it go, check them now ( like don't drive it today ) , the ball joints _WILL_ fall apart if let go.

Jacked up the car and noticed a bit of steering play (not substantial) on the driver's side with the accompanying creak. I'm thinking tie rod end at this point.

Will pull wheels when I get home to check boots on the ball joints.

Not the ball joints!

The upper control arm ball joint and the LCA ball joint boots are intact and look to be in fine shape. The tie rod ball joint boot is a little dry on the outside and cracked a bit, but still intact and the joint is solid and silent.

The sound is coming from further inboard... at least that what it sounds like. So it could be the rear poly bush on the LCA (maybe), the sway bar link (don't think so) or the steering rack (hope not).

Um.... It's a rack and pinion steering, so if you mean the idler like W123 and W124 chassis, I don't think that it would apply to the W210.
