Will 2.5 dsl and trans fit in lieu of 3.0 dsl and trans

I'm on the lookout for a new/replacement/spare donkey for my 124 300D. The car currently has an OM603 and manual trans.(5 and a half cylinder engine heh heh).
I was wondering if an OM602 will fit directly to the existing g/box or alternatively, will an OM602 c/w its own gearbox fit.
