hmmmm .... no dice I guess

"What I've written is what you've communicated to me via this thread"
Not really and not particuarly accurate. What you actually posted to the public is that I posted something either dishonest, disingenous, or something along those lines and did so to injure or hurt or otherwise "not help" another forum member. To the contrary, what I posted is fact. If you percieve that I have posted something inaccurate or factually wrong or disingeneous, then point it out. I am waiting for that.

Otherwise, your comments are simply silly at this juncture. But in any event, I already guessed you would not buy the old girl for $3,300.00. I actually have $3,375.00 invested in just buying the car. Repairs have been frugal thus far. Pictures are coming soon this evening of

1. I can actually lock my trunk

2. I might have a front seat installed. Lots of sheetmetal and self-tappign screws going on right now. Taking a break on Veterans Day.

News at 11.

So its not possible anyone would read your postings and have the same wrong impression as myself? If you're so confident, then why do you continue to not put the poll up to prove it?

How much cash did you lay in Tom's hand when you drove off...that's the selling price of a car in East Tennessee....maybe its different in South Carolina?

kerry 11-12-2012 04:00 PM

I've had the same impression.

First Efforts at Rust Repair

5 Attachment(s)
Tried my hand at rust repair today on the passenger side of the car. I got the car without a passenger seat. That was part of the deal so I figure it was time I tacked this on my day off.

I cut out the top portion of the remainder of my quarter panel from my parts car as a sheet metal repair. It actually fit pretty good and all was going very well until I actually leaned on the inside of the floor and the floor went with me. Being under 200 pounds I suspect that my guest options up front are now limited since I am pretty sure my nice new seat weights about 40 pounds or so. Looks like my leaning on the inside to put in some more sheet metal screws caused what looks like most of the floor to push out of the car. Maybe I should have left the car without a front passenger seat ? Seems like I caused more problems than good and I should have left the car without a front passenger seat. :( So, I guess I will not try this on the driver's side since the drivers side of the car looks about the same condition as the passenger. If the drivers side falls out like the passenger then that is certainly a show stopper. I thought the rust would be limited to a small section when in fact is runs not just the seam parallel to the rocker but it also runs through and rots where it curves up to the sill.

On a good note, I found my key and installed a lock in my trunk so at least I can lock my trunk now. The front doors are next then I can at least lock the old girl up.

Front Seat Install

1 Attachment(s)
Not the best picture but I am running out of daylight now. That is a really really nice front palamino front passenger seat, 6 pleat which is virtually perfect condition but for a "dimple" on the side where it looks like something pushed against it for a while.

The seat tilts back a little because of the rotten floor so the seat is sinking ... and I can just get one bolt in solidly. The seat belt bolt is barely holding and I could probably pull it out if I gave it a super tug. The 2 rear seat bolt holes for the seat are toast and the outer front bolt hole is not holding super tight so I am going to leave this alone. At least I got a front passenger seat.

I took a good look at the front driver's seat and I am starting to get a slight tilt backwards or "sink" already so I am guessing what is next for that side too. poop. :(

I have had success with repairing the seat mount area before. It requires a large patch which runs parallel to the ground under the mount and up the side of the inside of the rocker. The rust works its way from the bottom since that is where water runs. The vertical metal is more likely to be sound.

greazzer 11-13-2012 09:35 AM

The old girl apparantly has run her course. The "weight" of the front passenger seat seemed to be too much, so that was an excellent reason not to have a front seat in it. While sitting over night, the "floor" has dropped another few inches. Right now, from the middle to slightly foward of the front passenger door to the rear dog leg, the entire floor has dropped about 6 inches, slopping from the front to the rear. The rockers are rotten thru out also. What appeared to be a fist sized hole in the rocker around the middle of the front passenger door has now grown to the size of a football. Whatever I barely touch has turned into rusty cornflakes. The passenger seat belt would probably not withstand more than a 50 pound pull on it. Excluding replacing all metal from slightly foward of the "A" pillar to the trunk, there's no fixing it.

So, she's going into the FS section. I have to part her out now. There is no way to repair the rust as both sides of the floors are rotten, the rockers are rotten, and the rot has reached its way into the jack points and where the inner sill roles up into the body. There is no "patch panel" big enough except an entire mid section transplant which is not viable or feasiable since there are so many other issues.

Right now, I got the PS system for sale and the front driver's electric window regulator for sale. This will most likely be the last post for the Sleeper.

The sleeper is going to be put to rest. RIP.

She served me well for her 2 1/2 weeks of driving.

I thought the whole purpose of this car was not to fix the body, but to transplant the engine / manual transmission into another body.

I already have a "project car" as listed on STD.com.

It was the PO who listed this as a possibility, not me, but then again any car enjoys this possibility, so not sure what that offer really was.

Plus, why would I buy two cars from someone 675 miles away ? It was purchased primarily for the Getrag 717.400 and that is what I got currently, although with its own set of issues.

Mercedes-Benz : 300-Series CD in Mercedes-Benz | eBay Motors

Might be a good transplant candidate for your drivetrain if you head in that direction?

No offense, but I feel like you didn't read the sale ad too carefully. Yeah the car has issues, but you are constantly implying that you got swindled in this deal, without actually saying it.

The sale ad mentions the fuel gauge, the rust, the transmission issues, even lists several threads that discuss the car in depth as he worked through his own issues. Im not sure what you really wanted, its as if you expected a car in pristine condition, yet he even flat out says in his sale ad that he was going to use this as a drivetrain donor for a rust free body.

The rust is worse than you expected, but the rust is ALWAYS worse than expected, and no one forced you to fly out and buy the car off him without a way to back out of the deal and get home if the car failed an in person inspection.

The ad repeatedly calls the car a donor, yet you are angry that the rust is bad and the car is dangerous. Its confusing from an outside standpoint, looking at the sale ad, I see a lot of issues mentioned and a pretty clear description of a rare drivetrain in a car that the owner himself considers ready for retirement.

Basically, I don't see why you are surprised and upset that the car is what it is, because its pretty much what he described. He forgot to mention a few things like the trunk lock, but **** happens. He did accept an offer more than a thousand less than his asking price.

vstech 11-13-2012 11:25 AM

wow! I love the wheels on that car!
he could transplant the manual climate control from his 240 into this CD and have a GREAT car...
