1982 240D tires/
Hello all, just picked up a 82 240 4speed and need tires, any suggestion for a decent mid price tire, don't need speed rated! Car will be used mainly for my 40 mile daily commute, but the tires on it now are dry rotted and cracked and haven't been driven more than a couple hundred miles a month for years, it was owned by a very old couple. they are moving into assisted living and liquidating their home and their cars. thanks

I like the Firestone winterforce tires. They grip the road under all conditions particularly snow and rain.
Of course if you are in California, Texas or Florida, never mind.

I have Toyo Eclipse tires on my 240. And that is what I had on my wagon when I had that as well. They've been good tires. The tire shop told me I should have 195/75R14 size tires, but my speedo reads too slow now, which is nice for cruising on the highway, I can get higher speeds with lower RPM. I had to change two of the tires due to front end wear from worn components, and replaced the 75R14's with 70R14's. They are slightly smaller tires, and would probably make the speedo read closer to the true MPH but they are on the front so I can't be sure it will correct it completely.

Kumho works well for comuting. Rain, snow whatever and 40,000 mile service life. Don't get those "other" Chinese tires as they are junk.

Many low-end tires are made in China now. And some not-so-low-end ones.
If you want excellent tires, Michelin. Tend to be premium prices though apparently in the US they are a lot cheaper at Costco (not so here in Canada). As mentioned, General Altimax have a good rep. I've heard good things from my mechanic about Hankook, which he put several customers into. I like Pirelli myself and they seem to have regular price or rebate promotions. Check out Tirerack dot com. Lots of choices in various tire price ranges. And you can purchase road hazard insurance, which is no longer widely available at point of sale.

+1 on that. What is important to me they will list UTOG rating (the speed of the wear). In general, anything above 450 is ok. And dont anyone misinform you that harder compound means less traction. Tire technology had made tons of progress since than. Do be prepared that if you buy the tires from the online dealer, the local tire place may charge you more for installation & balancing.

The "other" Chinese tire I was referring to was Hankook. Had a set of them for a short time, would have kept longer if they had been round. Also, sub-par in rain and snow.

I've used these before, ( under the private label that Tire Rack used but, now they sell them under the Firestone name ) excellent snow tires and very reasonably priced. They are directional, have lots of sipes ( small cuts in the tread ) and have soft rubber. This soft rubber makes for higher wear rates in the dry so use them only in the winter season. As for what to get in summer, what size are your wheels and what is the original size? |

Do not skimp on tires. I would get Michelins from Costco.
