Turning signals work, sometimes and not others, after steering box replacement..?..?

I "successfully" replaced the steering box in my w123 (85 300TD) and had to do some adjusting to the steering wheel as I didnt get it back on straight. I managed with the help of other fine forum posters to figure out how to undo the steering box/shaft coupler and adjust the steering wheel to straighten it up.

Its about 95 percent straight. It may be able to be slightly adjusted one or two notches still, but its almost un-noticable that its off a little.

Now the turning signals on both sides dot seem to work all the time. I thought it was a fuse because none of them were working, and I saw when the wheel was still very crooked and off centre it also didnt work, but it was more that the signal wouldn't turn off after turning the wheel. That problem is gone now, and the fuse is fine. They decide to work fine for a drive and then the next time I take out the car they decide not to work....

Any clues, perhaps the steering box replacement had nothing to do with it but i somehow suspect they are related...

I know from replacing the steering box on my 126 that the shaft orientation is very important. You need to make sure that the shaft stays locked relatively in the center position while you detach the steering box. I did this using a bungee cord. If you fail to do this, the turn signal cancellation will not work correctly. For example, if you let the wheel spin 360° while the box was detached it will throw off the cancellation mechanism.

I think this would probably be the case if the signals were blinking but not cancelling out at the proper times as you mention. But for me the cancel actually still works, its just that the signals will not blink. To me its as if a fuse were blown. Like there was no power, but the mechanical parts are still working...however the fuse is fine, and they seem to work sometimes but not others...

Can this have anything to do with something with the steering column?
