Brakes Dragging

Hello all,
I am the happy owner of a 1983 240 D, manual transmission. I replaced the brake pads a couple of weeks ago after the light came on, and they would make occasional screeching noises, and were kind of spongy when pressing the peddle. After that, when I drove the car I would feel a sort of drag and would occasionally smell burning. My mechanic just replaced the brake lines and, he said the calipers look fine. But the brakes are still dragging. The mechanic loosed a piston near the m/c or booster and it isn't dragging for the moment, but the brakes are spongy again. He said I will need to replace the booster. Does this sound accurate or does it sound more like an M/C problem. FYI I am not loosing or leaking brake fluid. Any advice appreciated!
