When did EGR start on 240D?

I have a non-egr manifold set for my 240D, but no air cleaner. What year air cleaner should I look for?

I'm guessing 81 or 82 since my 80 240 parts car didn't have EGR.

My 83 air cleaner was all aluminum with no paint. my parts car had a non EGR air cleaner and it had a painted black bottom with an aluminum top.

so i would look for 80 or earlier 240 air cleaners.

I don't think that you'd need to change air cleaner housings. The air filter is the same part no. for my '79 and my '83. The housings appear to be exactly the same size. The only differences are that the later one is alloy, as already pointed out, and the earlier one has an inlet for the vacuum pump vent.

I'm pretty sure that what you need is the cover from a late 1980 or later model with an engine that had the piston pump.

OK, rephrase the question. Look at the picture. I have item 20, the corresponding exhaust manifold and air cleaner, and a leaky pipe between the two. The pipe and hardware are ~$200. This situation is not good for my athsma.

I have item 17, the corresponding exhaust manifold, but the no the air cleaner that goes with it. The air cleaner I have does not fit.

What do I look for to fit on 17? Stock appearance is good, but I'm ready for the maligned K&N at this point. Driving a thirsty mercury mountain in the meantime.

What's 71 anyway? This is not present on my car, but intriguing.

You can use any round paper filter , along with a rubber elbow and some PVC pipe if you don't mind the homemade look. Shouldn't be much more than $50 to setup.

Item 71 looks like the egr valve. If it is missing, then the egr pipe would certainly leak, since that's what it is supposed to connect to. Does the current setup have a standard dry air filter mounted right on top ? Perhaps a photo or two would be useful here.

Seems to me that the cheapest/easiest solution would be to block off the egr openings in both manifolds and eliminate the pipe.

EGR valve actually not shown. EGR valve hides behind the butterfly valve in this perspective. It's a stainless vacuum operated valve.

71 looks like a cyclone air/oil separator.

Yes, standard dray air filter on top.

Kind of hard to tell what material one is looking at in a drawing, but it does appear to have an inlet and an outlet-so possibly an oil separator. Does your car not have an oil separator? Where does the crankcase vent terminate?

In that case, I have no idea why it won't fit. Mine are interchangeable, although my intake manifold on the '83 looks more like #17 than #20.

Is there some reason that you wouldn't consider simply blocking off the EGR path at both ends?

Didn't think about capping tube off. Would have to pull manifolds and go at clamps w/ cutoff tool.

Filter fits in air box fine.

Air box does not fit on manifold. Note different locations of inlet to manifold between parts 17 and 20.

Item #17 is the same intake manifold my 80 240D uses. the nipple sticking out of the center is where the pipe from the VC connects to.

My 80 has the black bottom air cleaner housing with the aluminum lid.

Item #20 is like the 82 & 83 240 uses. not sure with the 81,.
item #71 is the oil vapor seperator from the VC.

Item #71 bolts on with 3 10mm bolts to the front of the manifold right above item #65.

I forgot to mention they are not compatible. someone chopped up an aluminum bottom to put on a non EGR manifold in my blue 83.(someone swapped my EGR manifold before i bought it). I swapped the black bottom and it fit perfectly to the non EGR manifold.
