OM617 In Wilmington, NC

I was at Cape Fear Pick-n-Pull on Hwy. 421 just outside Wilmington, NC. In the yard was a 300SD that seemed to be intact though the body and interior were pretty rough. Under the hood (still in place and keeping the rain out) was a seemingly complete OM617. I tried looking the car up on their web site but they evidently have mis-inventoried it because nothing with a 617 shows up on the inventory list.

If someone wants it I'm willing to help them pull it. I already have a known good back-up engine so I don't need it.

Dan

Come on down! It's an easy 2 day drive (or the one day drive from Hell - a friend did it) and we can load up the needed tools and have at it. Not sure on the price but you can call them. Sadly, I have no clue if it ran when it came in so it's a bit of a (as the old-timers used to say and now I'm an old-timer) pig in a poke. But I'll bet we could get it pretty cheap.

Post Used OM617

It's a simple thing to remove the injectors and then adjust the valves followed by a compression test, then you'd have a really good idea how good this engine is .

I find most junked Diesels are because of hard starting, every one I bother to check, has tigh valves and his lowers compression significantly .

As in worn injectors and a couple bad glow plugs, most will give up and scrap the car .

I see tons of 617's in yards around here, nothing special..
Biggest problem is most yards want north of $400 for an unknown engine because they're DEEZEL! I've heard of people stripping them down to longblocks and buying them as gassers for ~$125 as a work around, then buying the IP separate.. not what I'd do but people do it..
