Really Weird Power Drain -Help! ideas?

OK, so wired in a fast glow system on my '75 300D and am manually glowing with a pushbutton, ford starter solenoid setup -works great except . . . .

If I leave the cable connected from the battery positive post to the solenoid it will drain the battery sometimes . . . . huh? If I disconnect this cable and just bridge it in the morning to battery to activate glows no problem. Yesterday, I stopped at my indies and explained the problem -he thought that cheap bush button starter switch could be the problem so I changed it out for a heaver unit. To test, I drove it to work where system was connected (to battery) for a full 8 hours - no battery drain. Drove car home and 9 hours later (this morning) attempted to glow and battery read 11.7 volts! Wtf! Put a charger on battery and drove this morning, came home and put a fluke on battery for an hour plus - no volt drop???? What could be causing such a strange intermittant problem? Defective solenoid switch? Btw, the ground is not connected in the glow circuit at temp sender per previous loop system for those of you who might ask -thanks!
