I found this out at the PNP and would like to know if i can use it in my 1983 300cd. The wiring plugs in the same and fits perfect but it does not work at all. I have tried all the "modes" on the wheel and nothing

That's a direct swap to your '83. The '82 W123's have a smaller opening and will not accept the switch.
![]() If it doesn't work, see if there are broken or loose contacts. Of course I'd check the bulbs first, the small map light is actually a 5W unit, and burns brighter/whiter than a standard 4W found in "city lights" of European headlamp assemblies. IIRC the large festoon is 5W only, double check length and wattage because they're very similar to the license plate bulbs, so you do not mistakenly put in the wrong wattage bulb and burn the plastic.

Tarnex or Brasso would sure make quick work of cleaning up those contacts too.
Might try a pair of jumper wires from your battery on the contacts to see if it actually works too. You probably have a bad switch.

This is the dome light I have in my 1983 240D. The bulb is slightly longer than my big baggie of bulbs. I slightly bent the prong tab and its works fine. I havent tried turning the switch to see its functions. I was happy that it worked after replacing the bulb and it lights OK when you open the door and it stays on for a few seconds afterwards.

I grab these at the yard when ever I see them, to help fund my addiction. They can be found in 123 and 126 and were an option.

Yes Id sure be checking the contacts on your rotary switch.
Tarnex sure does a job on them. That an a rubbing alcohol wash afterwards works great.

Ok, i sprayed a tiny bit of brake parts cleaner (i know its very harsh) on the contacts to see if there was any hope and it works! I will now get some crc electronics cleaner that wont eat the plastic! Thank you all for the help
