Loss of power/stalling
Hi - I'm on the side of the road now. I know I have to search.
1984 300d. I don't drive the car a lot. My daily driver is down, so I have been driving it for 3 days in a row. Going up slight incline on highway, car will not accelerate, and slowly dies, stalling out. Seems like turbo is not kicking in. Pulled to side of road, car re-starts, but rpms really low, will not accelerate, stalls out. sit for a few minutes, re start, car starts driving normally, then 60 second later, slowly stalls out. Lots of engine shaking. Know this is a bad description - Fuel filters? Any side of the road thoughts? |

Fuel filters? Plugged tank vent? Failing lift pump. Plugged air filter. Plugged tank screen. Out of fuel.

2x fuel filters. Quick way to confirm its them and not elsewhere is with a quart or so container of diesel with a hose directly to your pump. Pop your return line into the container too.
That gets you running off a totally separate fuel supply.

With any diesel it is good practice to keep a spare set of fuel filters and the tools to change them it in the trunk at all times. Without them there is basically nothing possible I can think of alongside the road. Other than loosening the fuel cap to eliminate a vacuum locked tank as the culprit. You are basically up the creek without a paddle.

If happens to be the Fuel Tank Screen Plugged and you have at least a 1/2 Tank of Fuel you can swap the positions of the Cigar Hose (Fuel Return Hose) with the Fuel Out Let Hose where they come off of the Fender Well/Wheel House.
That will draw Fuel From a Stand Pipe that is higher inside of the Tank and has no Screen. It also means you can run out of Fuel earlier than you think. So, if that works you need to keep the Tank Filled. If there is enough gunk in the Fuel even a new Fuel Filter can get plugged in a matter of minutes.
