I did some reading and evidently the secondary pump can fail and cause the governor to seize and crack that plastic gear.

Not wanting to deal with that fiasco all over again, I disabled the secondary pump so that it cannot seize and cannot take out my governor.

After that I put the governor back in and it hasnt popped out or anything since.
Thanks. That's good to know if I ever get another one of these with an automatic. Did this governor 'fiasco' require transmission removal?

Many American automatics up through the '50s had secondary pumps and could be roll-started.

No, it didnt require trans removal. At least not on my 124. 201 would be different matter.

I'm sure it was still a pain to deal with.
Nearly every Mercedes automatic I've owned has had some type of minor or major problem.
It's the main reason I prefer the stickshifts.

Bad alternator/regulator on a 126 diesel. Ran many miles (daylight) on a charge, topped it off at night, and kept a spare battery in trunk. Once you get a diesel started, nothing but the accessories need power.
