W115 motor mount replacement & subframe removal w/pics

All i can say about this job is that i waited wayy to long to do it.

It feels like a different car, no more vibrating, loud resonating sounds through-out the cabin... so smooth at idle you almost wouldn't know it running..

Someone before me had tried to replace the motor mounts and stripped out 2 of the 6mm mounting bolts that hold the mounts to the subframe. Well in the W115 300D there was not anywhere near enough remove to remove the stripped bolts with the subframe still in place, so i had to drop the subframe. To remove the stripped allen bolts i took a 12mm 12 point socket and hammered it over the head of the bolt, worked great.

Its was actually a fairly simple jobs, just lots of things had to be done before you were ready to drop the subframe. it also required at least 2 people.

here are some pics. I used 2 floor jacks to lower the subframe, bottle jack to support the motor, and jack stand to support the front part of the subframe since the subframe would always want to fall forward.

Did you only replace the motor mounts with subframe out? Excuse me ignorance, but does the w115 have subframe bushings like the 108's or 111's?

Best Regards,

David

Yeah at this time i only did the motor mounts. I replaced the subframe mounts last year, so there was no need to replace them again...

When I did my carrier bearing yesterday I also replaced the transmission mount, and boy what a difference that made. I can relate to how satisfying the feeling of a smoother car is!!

Nice work!

Doesn't look like a fun job. But, one that should have been much easier. Sometimes PO's just get me...

When I did mine the bolts were not stripped, so it was not a challenging job like yours. I am impressed!

Colorado, this is actually and fairly simple job, I didn't run into the first problem, or hang up, if you have an extra hand you shouldn't have any trouble.

Thanks for posting that link Tyler, I should prolly add this to my original thread.....

Looks great. I'm getting mine done by a mechanic, any idea what a job like this should cost?
I'm in southern California with a 1976 300D w115 body style

I would love to do it myself, just not skilled enough

ohbella, if your bolts are not stripped out the job should be about a 2-3 hour job on a W115. Its a little more tough than doing motor mounts on a W123 from my experience. So i assume the mechanic might charge you about $350.

euroamg, I hope your bolts are not stripped like mine.

Good to hear. Where did you go for subframe/motor mounts?
