Remove alternator pulley without impact wrench 1985 300D

Alternators with bolt on pulleys have some way to hold the shaft. It will be a Allen socket or a external hex.
If you have a vise, clamp a Allen key short end facing up , place a box wrench over the pulley nut then drop the whole mess on the Allen. Turn the box wrench, the proper direction is clockwise since you are working upside down. If you don't have a vise, put a long pipe on the Allen then work is against the box wrench. |

The OP never specified exactly what brand of alternator he has, for alternators in general, my words are based on actual hands on not on theory. Are there non holdable shafts? Probably. What does the factory manual show for working with your non holdable shafts and what torque rating does it give? |
most stores Harbor freight, Wallyworld, Northern Tool... automcparts etc... have a 12v impact wrench for about $30... get one.

I have Harbor Freight 12 Volt Impact Wrenches in each of my Vehicles.
They are made for changing Wheels/Tires but I have found it is almost as good as Pneumatic Impact Wrench (an I have those at home and have used them at work). I used one on My Alternator Pulley Nut and it worked the same a Pneumatic Impact. It speeds up Tire Rotation and gets you off of the sholder of the Road Faster when you need to change a Flat Tire. It has been over 10 years since I had to drag out My Pneumtic Impact Wrench and then it was the 3/4" drive one. I have been able to use the 12 Volt Harbor Freight ones for all of the other jobs I have done. Even though it has a Lock Washer when I installed the Pulley Nut I use Loctite. |

I have an HF 12 volt too. It operates by winding up, spinning a while and then whacking. It doesn't seem that powerful. Does yours work like that also, or is mine defective?

that's how every 12v impact I've ever seen operates. it's not like an electric or pneumatic, but the whacking is strong, gets the job done.

When I changed the Bosch alternator on my BMW, I did it without an impact.
Just did it very carefully, holding the fan as I recall. It was 10 years ago, so I dont remember the exact technique, but it WAS possible. |
