If the battery and wiring is good and you still have slow cranking RPM, it's probably the starter. A starter is checked on the bench by sound (to an experienced ear) according to a local rebuild shop. Or by no load RPM (9500) per Bosch.
It sucks having starter problems, especially in winter. I went through 2 winters with a weak/defective 126 RPM starter. Took it apart and with parts from other starters, cobbled up a good one and no more problems since. This 126 RPM starter gave me a lot of grief for 2 years. I always had to glow the plugs to start, even in the summer with a hot engine. In the winter, I get only one chance of 30 sec cranking time and no more. Turns out the rotor had partial short to ground windings from a worn bushing. Replaced rotor, new bushings, brushes and what an amazing difference!

You're right, I should have said a glow plug problem. Someone could easily think the glowplugs were bad and replace them when it was a hairline crack in the strip fuse.
I think he wrote that the wiring had been checked but that's very different than checking for voltage.

Don't forget to disconnect battery terminal when working on the starter terminals!
Do not over tighten terminals on the starter or glow plugs! They have to be just tight enough for an electrical connection (to pass juice) so that the nut does not come loose. Over tightening will crack the plastic insulator which means buying new parts.

I have a fair amount of experience starting 617's in cold weather. I have not found the 'hold the accelerator to the floor' advice useful. I only put slight pressure on the accelerator when starting in cold weather. Once one or two cylinders start firing, I then hold the accelerator to the floor. Holding it to the floor right from the start seems to introduce too much cold fuel into the cylinders, hindering ignition. Holding it to the floor once one or two cylinders are firing helps keep those cylinders firing until the rest get warm enough to start firing also.

In my case with a 190d 2.2 its one pesky gp in the rear of the motor ,I real bugger to get too. I can start at 45 degrees, but 30 or under ,forgettaboutit.Ive found that taking the intake with filter housing off ,then resting a small electric Holmes ceramic heater works everytime for hard starts ,let heat for 5 minutes then fire it up while the heating unit is on ,this was out of desperation and until I get that little bastord gp replaced this will have to work. Since the intake air is somewhat heated it quickly helps with cold start up issues.I recommend fixing it the right way but if its only a cold morning issue only ,this was one way I could drive out in the morning.Your 300d s air intake is different than the 190ds but comes off just as easy.
Ive found the only sure fired way of gp trouble shooting is replace all with bosch branded gps from the very beginning.Old ones dont fire up as hot and if your not sure of how old the ones your working with ,this fixes any guess work. |

Just had a thought -- could your cold start issues be partially related to the fact that you run the glow plugs through two cycles before startup? Is this robbing enough juice from the battery so that the car does not have enough juice to crank a still-relatively-cold motor sufficiently to allow startup?

The Glow Plugs are able to heat the Prechamber to a higher heat then a worn Engines compression can heat it. Also when you are cranking the Engine your Glow Plugs are also on.

I keep wishing op's would wrap up their thread with a answer....frozen to death has to be the answer....I've read every hard to start when cold thread out there and none have an answer...so I suppose getting froze to death is more common then we think ;-)
