Rebuild W126 bendix calipers?

I can't get the metal ring back on that holds the dust boot on, does anyone know how to do it? I know you can stuff buy rebuilt calipers, but they cost a lot more than a rebuild kit, and peachparts doesn't even sell bendix calipers so I couldn't get the core charge back either.

If all else fails you could always buy a cheap pair of ATE's from the wreckers and use those for your core charge.

I bought some ATEs from OReillys. They only had 1 Bendix & I needed 2. I just loaded the cores in the box and dropped them off. There was no discussion regarding brand, only checking to see that there was a caliper in the box.

I did have to swap out the wrong side caliper that was packaged as the correct one. Also had to swap a rear which was packaged as a front. Store manager thought the problem was me. After comparing, he agreed that problem was crappy A1-Cardone QC. Always buy Cardone locally because 25-50% have something wrong - some you can repair, others you swap.

Two observations: if you've tried to get that ring on, and failed, chances are you've warped it. Once that happens, I really don't think it's ever going back on. BTDT.

I had the same dilemma as you, hard to find the Bendix. I'm in Canada and its even worse here.

However, when shopping I remember that I found some places online, Stateside, that would sell the rebuilt ATEs in pairs for less than one reman Bendix. (However for me shipping calipers to Canada was too expensive.)

In the end I stumbled on an old-stock Bendix on a shelf here. Had I not had that luck, I would have changed both sides out for ATE and been done with it.

I don't think I bent the ring, but yeah I don't think there is any way to put it back on. At least it was an extra caliper that already leaked anyway, and I only wasted about $40 on pads and rebuild kits for those calipers. Its kinda frustrating that its going to cost ~$250 more than I expected to finish that job though.

I am pretty sure I found sets of ATEs at around $100 for two. I ended up paying $110 for the Bendix reman I found. Maybe my memory is faulty on the ATEs.

You can get ATE rebuild kits via the normal vendors for $30-40.

Agreed.

You only rebuild a M/B caliper once. Then you go out and buy the loaded calipers for all subsequent work.

It appears that for the most part rebuilt Bendix calipers are no longer sold. It will be about $110 each for rebuilt ATE calipers and $35 for pads, I know that really that's not bad for maintenance on a car that cost so much new, but since I have done brake jobs on other cars and rebuilt the calipers easily (VW, Alfa Milano, Nissan, etc) it seemed like a lot of money to spend if it wasn't necessary.

I was just researching rebuilt calipers a few weeks ago when I was getting ready to rebuild my ATE unit. I was able to order Bendix calipers locally through my O'Reilly (in stock in local warehouse) and available via Amazon.com (example here for C126 560SEC).. Amazon wants like $70 apiece for semi-loaded Bendix units. I don't know how that compares to other marques, but I would have no problem paying $70 for a qwality rebuilt caliper.

Cheers,
Gerry
