Ok ,not quite arctic,at 26 degrees my old 300cd with 430k needs 2 glow cycles before going for start and wont settle out at idle till i give it a few minutes at 2000rpms to warm her up,finicky 617.Two other cars are close to half the miles and dont show these signs ,the mileage is the reason and will give you an idea about the future that lies ahead for a higher mileage 617 ,a block heater is your friend with an aged car,if not for your engines sake your starters.

I scored 15 gallons and my dad got 22. We're good for a long while. I also still had some Rotella T6 on hand.

It supposed to be -2 when I leave work today. Should be fun starting the 602.

Does the 602 handle the cold well? My OM601 doesn't seem to care if its 0F or 80F out....starts without heater in 1-2 rotations in either case...

So far I've not had any problems. I think the coldest I've had to start was in the high single digits.

The only problem I did have was when I only had 3/5 of the glow plugs working. That was a pain to get it to start up..

The old 71 220d performed wonderful this weekend. Conifer, CO to Glendo, WY and back. Temps ranging from -10 (-25 with windchill) to 45. Love that little Benz. It held the road wonderfully as I saw many another vehicle off the road in WY!

MINUS 15f in Chicago today

It was -15f in Chicago this morning, and I haven't started my 1983 240D in a week. It started without a block heater, after glowing it 3 times.

Before buying a block heater, you might try loosening the plug in the block first to insure it will come out (passenger side, under intake). I was going to swap the block heater from my old 1985 engine to the replacement engine I installed, but couldn't get the plug out of the later. That was while it was on an engine stand, so easy access. I bought a big allen wrench at Ace (17 mm?), used a cheater bar, and heated the plug and block with a propane torch. I finally gave up after banging on it for 30 minutes. Anyway, I won't need a heater for a long time since >400 psig compression in all cylinders and starts immediately, which isn't too hard here where oranges grow in the backyard.

I've gotten a newer 300TD since the original post, this one has 185k on it rather then 350+, and it comes with a block heater, which I have been using joyfully.

The heat comes so much faster now.

Well, with no block heater, and a non-functioning passenger heater at the moment, I won't be testing my Euro TD today.

Happy Motoring, Mark

I've used the less pricey Amsoil 15W40 Marine Diesel oil for over twenty years in the 617 engines. From New Jersey to Texas and all points in between, it cannot be beat. In cold weather starting conditions, the engine turns over very easily and starts right up. Amsoil 15W40 Marine Diesel oil absorbs any condensation and will extend the life of the motor.

-3 the other day and the 350SDL started right up after 2 glow cycles. (The 350 stumbles on startup even when its warm out and i didn't get a chance go figure out the problem last year) This made for a rumbling start for about a minute but at least everything was running!

I started the Gwagen up in 5 degrees the other week and again, started right up on the first shot.

Both cars have block heaters but i have yet to use them this season. HOWEVER I know for a fact that the only reason i'm not having trouble is that I finally wised up and put in a lighter weight winter oil for the first time....last year was the last straw (scroll to bottom)
