Well be sure you get the whole system, best gotten as in a complete parts car. You need everything for the swap. Not just the transmission. You need all the clutch and flywheel parts, hydraulic parts, you need the shift rods and the shifter, (The shifter box that mounts to the bottom of the floor. And always a few more bits. That is why if you have the complete car it really helps. A gas engine or diesel engine car does not really matter, both will work, though the flywheel is engine specific. The 190 does have a somewhat different style and more expensive clutch. If you do buy a parts car and there are a few available after hurricane Sandy, I would stay away from a "flood" damage parts car.

That would be a good idea but I would have no idea where to look for a parts car

I bought a 1984 190E 2.2 5speed (with 717.411) on Craigslist. It had some engine trouble though it could drive. Needed priming, smoked badly, etc. These factors got the price low even though it was in the "cars & trucks" section instead of the "auto parts" section, though you can check both. Atlanta area frequently has a good variety. Also, pick and pull junk yards are an option, though I would want to have the car side by side. If you do the swap, my thread might help. Good luck!
