good motor, but it has its issues like many others. Main problems are the head can crack= bad (#14 heads do it the most). Or the vacuum pump can self destruct and take the engine with it=very bad (but does not always happen when pump dies). Good power for a 124 and decent gas mileage too. I have a 601 and a 603 (the 3.0L)

I daily drive two of the wagon 124's with the 603, one has had the head replaced, one is stock with over 240K on it. both are amazing indispensable cars I wouldn't trade for anything.

Thankyou,

the series of head # ie #14 etc...
are the numbers visible on the side of the head with the manifolds on such that the series number could be determined at a glance - maybe with the aid of a mirror ?

and

was the #14 head the only one with the dreaded cracking problems within the 3.0 ?

thanks

it's not a dreaded cracking problem.
it's a failure condition from overheating. if the trap ox was removed, and the head was ok at that time, and the cooling system is meticulously maintained, there are zero issues with the #14 head.

however, maintaining the cooling system requires a perfect fan clutch, and upgraded 11 blade fan, perfect condition belt tensioner, shock, and bearings, frequent coolant flushing with MB coolant spec, and distilled water only. also, the a/c condenser needs frequent cleaning, as well as the radiator for bugs and debris will block cooling airflow.

the problem with the vacuum pump is NOT ONLY ON THE 603 engine!!!
ALL MERCEDES ENGINES WITH A VACUUM PUMP BUILT AFTER 1980 HAVE THE FAILURE POTENTIAL!!!!!!!!

Thanks - understood...
on this 602 at 201K was emitting audible ticking in vacuum pump - just ordered new one from dealer.. going over this project as thoroughly as possible this time thinking to machine head and reassemble and see and still considering your head as a backup - if you get time to pull it maybe drop me a line with how it looks as for valve/piston contact
