No, the HVAC unit is like that, see how the controls are marked on the black surround.

Look to the left of the center console. The panel running between the center console and the door (underneath the steering wheel) is gone. I'll add an arrow to the picture to show what I mean...

I've got to think there are people out there who have a nostalgic attachment to the 240D and who will therefore pay something of a premium....at least I'm hoping that's the case as I prepare to sell my 240D this spring!

Miles are still a bit high for that price though so it would have to be exceptionally taken care of to warrant that price.

They call it the kick panel or knee panel....you have to realize if they wanted both driver and passenger....it would have cost more...they could only afford the leather

Oh and they only want 12,000$ for this one...

Most likely a 40 yarder. The people I bought my recent 84SD said that they paid $5k for it. I got it for $1500 & will have ~ $2500 in it before I fix the AC. I'd probably insult him & offer $2500.

There are always things that I don't see when making a decision so I try to get it for a price where worst case scenario, I don't lose much. Sometimes I end up with a deal. They ALWAYS need more than the seller admits.

I turned down 1 SD at $3,000. Later it was listed with another for $2500 total for both. You only have to be patient.

I liked my 240D when I had it. Of course, one must acclimate themselves to a 240D! Mine was a '79 full manual- 4 speed stick, manual windows. While I had it, I added a passenger side rear view, replaced all the plastic panels with the appropriate wood. The car was nickle green, with a bamboo tex interior. An excellent runner with minor rust and only 120k miles, I sold it a few years back for $2200. It was great while I had it, but i don't miss it's glacial acceleration!

You only need 1 IDIOT who thinks it is worth it.

Economic 101. Everything is based on supply and demand. The market will determine the price. So get over it.

Having spent lots of time in 240D's over the years I can't fathom why someone would actively seek one out and pay a premium to own one. It was a nice car in its day with fine economy and chassis dynamics I just don't see it as a potentially collectable car worthy of a premium.
I wouldn't want to drive a Model-A in modern traffic, and once-common cars like '57 Chevys and '65 Mustangs are selling for $20 - 50K, or more.
So there's a niche-market for affordable classics that can be driven regularly, and not just admired as garage-queens.
That said, if that car was truly rust-free, it might be worth 6K if it had about half the mileage.
A few years back, I paid $1300 for a very solid stick-shift '82 240D with 177K on the clock, and a factory replacement engine. Needed a windsheild and some mechanical stuff (axles, flexjoints, alternator, AC compressor) and a set of Michelins so I have about 3K in it now. The hood needs paint and there are a few rust spots about a quarter-size or smaller, so it's not perfect. But it's probably about as rust-free as one could find in an east-coast example at that price.
While it lacks the refinement of my Toyota Camry, I appreciate my 240D for what it is and represents. And with a great engine, brakes, suspension and solid body, I have no gripes about power or driving it on the highway.

Happy Motoring, Mark

I would only get a 240D with a manual gear box. Having a 300TD with turbo and the obvious automatic makes that an easy decision.

The sad thing is that I bet a lot of these people asking insane amounts for cars that don't warrant it will end up sending them to the crusher instead of actually selling them for what they are worth.
No one gave me 7K, so off to the crusher for $200 scrap.

A lot of us could use a lot of parts of all kinds, but based on the age of these cars, they will not be parted out even by junk yards.
Here in NJ, there is no junk yard that I know of with anything having to do with W123s, aside from one import garage that keeps a few on hand for their needs, not as anything anyone can just buy. They've all been closed up in the name of the EPA and/or land value for McMansions. There's a pick n' pull about 2 hrs west in PA. Even then I have no idea what they have. 2 hrs is a long way out.

Or they get bought by a guy just south of here who parks them in a cow pasture and sells the parts for over inflated prices to the carborro and pittsborro bio diesel hippie set.
