Need help identifying part in picture 87 190D

Hi,

I am trying to diagnose some issues and have a seperate thread going on for that. I need help in identifying on part that I think might be causing a faulty ground or a short .

The first picture is of the part in question. It looks like either a fuse or a connector. Its all rusted out and i fear that its broken and needs either replacing or at least a thorough cleaning if it can stand it.

The second picture is of a vacuum line on the left of the main fuse box that has been plugged with a golf tee by the previous owner. I can't tell what its for . If any one can let me know what those four lines go to, i will try to figure out which one is capped by checking those systems.

The first picture looks like it might be the ceramic resistor usually located somewhere down in front of the driver's side wheel in the engine compartment.

With the plugged vacuum line your best bet is to figure out what color the plastic pipe is, that will give you a clue as to what system it is part of and what it is usually connected to.

If you put your vehicle information somewhere in your signature or your post that will usually help others figure out what the pieces and parts are.

1. behind drivers headlight, aux fan speed resister.
2. it's a vacuum feed/user, it'll have to be traced in the engine compartment.

see pics in this post, then go to main thread, and on the next page, babymog explains to me where many of the lines go, and what's been bypassed on mine.
how's $2500 sound for an 87TD with full maintenance history

Before you do anything else, clean all the debris from the cowl area. It will save a lot of grief down the road.

Cleaning out the dirt and grime on the tubes to get their original colors . However, they were replaced by the PO so I am not sure if they will match the original spec. Still, they were done by a Merc shop so they should match the original ones.

Thanks for the tip about having the car in the signature. I did that. Its a W201 non-turbo 2.5 Automatic.

Thanks for identifying the part. I am going to search for a replacement.

Thanks for the help. I am going to get a replacement as the ceramic part looks shot out.

For the vacuum lines, I am going to make a note of all the lines I can find and their colors and where they lead to in the engine compartment.

Couldn't find the exact thread you mentioned but i will be doing a search for posts by 'babymog' and try to find out as much as i can.

Yes Sir, its a 87 190d. I put it down in my signature. Is the info about 300d pertinent to the 190d ?

I have a chance to take a picture for you on my 190D. The missing vacuum is for climate control. I believe the plug one is for vacuum switch off valve to and from the ignition switch. The ceramic block is the blow slow speed resister as others had posted. Plenty in the JY.

Thanks so much for taking a picture. In my car, that vacuum off-white plug/valve is disconnected from the Y-shaped connector. The other side of the Y-vacuum connector is linked to a brown line.
The vacuum shut-off line, i think is the brown hose with blue stripe on the side and it goes through without any other connections. At least that's how it is in my car. I tested it out since there is a slight hesitancy in shutting off the car. Something i will work on later.

Thanks again for clarifying the lines.

Thank you once more. I am going to go ahead and read all of that forum. Congrats on the car, BTW.

Doing more testing with the vacuum lines today, I discovered a few things that I havent been able to figure out on my own.

1. There is a black vacuum line that comes in through the firewall but its open and not connected to anything on the interior side. Any one knows what that may be connected to either end ? I have been looking at the diagrams in the manual but havent been able to find the appropriate one. I tried following the line but it disappears in the engine compartment and its impossible to trace.

2. Vacuum connectors are cracking up and causing leaks in many different circuits. Is there any alternative to getting the factory parts ? Seeing that they cost $2-3 each plus shipping and there must be a dozen or so that i want to replace since the dash is already removed, Can i get a larger diameter vacuum hose that will do the job ? Is that a bad idea ? any recommendations ?

3. I had the HVAC controls out for taking off the dash. Now that I am trying to find problems , something peculiar is happening. The blower comes on when the ignition is in the ON position but as soon as i start the car, the blower does not come on at all. Where should I begin to sort this out ?
