Is this 1984 300d a good deal?

Lately I've been looking at getting an 80's era diesel Mercedes and I think this is a good deal but I just want to make sure. I'm going to look at it this upcoming week but any advice would be awesome. Thanks!

It was useful as far as providing an example of what not to buy, and why not to buy it.

That car's origin of sale (area code 718) IIRC is in the NYC area, which is a suggestive sign that the car may have rust at this age. Couple that with the phoney pics, 300K miles, and no details provided on previous care, and I call it a fail.

Presented as shown, that car would not command those asking dollars here (Texas) even if it were an indigenous rust-free local/Texas car, with records.

the car looks good, mileage is a bit high for the price he's asking, but if it's rust free, and starts cold, and runs and shifts well, it's not a bad deal.

It's a dealer though! If they said "vehicle" one more time .
It's just another car to move off the lot as far as they're concerned.

It is not a GOOD deal at $3500. It might be a FAIR deal if everything is perfect. In particular, this means fully functional A/C, cruise control, windows, etc. If you can find anything not working on that car, it is not worth $3500. At least not around my neck of the woods.

That car was recently on eBay. And I bet on it.
In fact I think the dealer use a fake buyer to outbid me when I found out it was a salvaged car! ...and he presented it as a clear title car.

It was sold for $2700

Item #: 130847740678

i hope the link is ok http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=130847740678&cmd=VIDESC

Do a search on the vin and you'll find out.

He was worried about that and sent me several emails that it was not his fault of somebody sold him that as a clear title and that carfax he showed didn't mention it was salvaged.

Even so, it's a great looking car.

Anything from the rust best is probably not rust free in my opinion. Its just not possible. Chrome around wheel wells always has me wonder what is being hidden. Just my 2¢

You can probably do better. The only thing good is judging by the condition of the front seat unless it has been changed out . The car may only have 300k.

I have seen a lot of bad sellers over the years in the area this car is being vended in. Personally I would assume the seller is a liar without actually absolute proof of it.

For the kind of money you are spending I suspect with a little patience you can do much, much better.

I really get off on descriptive descriptions like the body is good except it is dented. I have a car for you. The body is great except for all the sideswiped areas. Rebuilt if at some time a few steering components where changed?

X2. I bought a blue plate California car and still had to fix some surface rust. Any way you can go inspect it?

I would go look and take the money to buy. Would negotiate down and expect to find some repairs done incorrectly and in need of a redo. Also expect paint to fail if it isn't original or has over spray. If they can't tape correctly, they likely took other short cuts.

Add $1500 to whatever purchase price you end up with and decide if you'd be happy. If not, walk. Somethings you won't be able to diagnose ie recently filled and temporarily working AC that needs significant work.
