engine mount orientation
hi all,
i'm in the process of replacing the front engine mounts on my 83 SD. the old mounts don't have any markings on them, unlike the new OEM mounts that i have which have one/two blue dots and the P/N on one side. the manual says to note the orientation of the old mounts and install the new ones in that direction. looking at the mounts they look pretty much square, so i'm not sure which way to install them. so, does anyone know if the side with the dot/dots and part number goes facing the engine or away from the engine? any help will be appreciated

They used to be different part numbers for left and right but unfortunately they only sell one now. Was the manual referring to the orientation of the shields?

no, i think it's talking about the orientation of the actual mounts. i have some NOS OE mounts (one with 2 blue dots and one with 1 blue dot). just wondering if it matters which way i install them

I just replaced mine on my '82 300sd. Made no difference which way I installed them

My replacement mounts on my project have no orientation and I just bolted them to a flat plate welded in on each side - take a look at my project thread where there are some pics. Shouldn't matter as far as I can tell but my mounts are aftermarket.

Answer
Ignore it.
Since MB went to a single part number, there is no Left/Right orientation. There is a MB service note to this effect, as I recall it was hard copy in the mid 1980's. .

thanks for all the replies, i did have two different motor mounts, p/n 1231243013 (for the left side, this part number now applies to the right side too on a W116/w126 300SD) and a 1232412713 (right side)i had to dig out my german workshop manual and it didn't say anything about the orientation of the actual motor mount itself (i thought the dots had to either face forward or backward). hope they'll hold up since they are RONOS (really old new old stock){can i trademark that acronym?}. i also have a diaphragm-style vacuum pump repair kit from 1983-wonder if the rubber is still good..
