Shut the engine off while rolling in neutral. Two distinct noises. First sounds like a hanger bearing issue. Second noise was clearly from the wife complaining about buying cars falling apart and wasting money on them. Second noise was much louder

Second noise can be fixed by clearly explaining that the cost of a new car............even a very economical and reliable one............is about $.62 per mile. See if she's OK with paying that...............

The SD can be run for about $.27 if you're careful.

I had a rattle in the drivers door that was solved after the electric window winder failed and I fixed it. The mechanism had only one bolt holding it together.

Not saying that your problem is that similar but it might have something in common with yours. For instance perhaps you have a loose baffle in your muffler.

Leave second noise at home.

Get one of your friends with a smart phone (that knows how to use it to record/post video) to go for a drive, and repeat the test twice (recording each).

Please, no conversation/discussion during the video shoot.

Post a link to the video, for review.

Thank you.

"Im in a bind, and im way behind, looking for a deal"

I can get the bearing locally for $20, no support mount. One with the support mount is $140. Online the whole assembly can be had for $40 including shipping. I feel I may regret this, but im only replacing the bearing. The support mount will have to wait. As much as I hate doing a job twice, I also hate being hosed.

Any thought on this? Cant wait for shipping one in.

Are you replacing a component before any good diagnosis has been done? AFAIK, there needs to be further testing to confirm a bad support bearing.

Or do you want my thoughts regarding tossing random parts at it?

This is going to sound silly, but does the noise stop if you turn off the blower fan? I ask because I had a bad fan in a Volvo 240 that made a HORRENDOUS squealing noise intermittently.

This week started getting really bad and went from squealing to loud tinny rattle and suddenly stopped, came back a few more times and stopped again.
The "tinny rattle" part makes me think exhaust hangers. Given your exhaust system a good shake lately? Any loose heat shields or clamps?

Looks like the hanger bearing was the source of my noise. It was at least due for replacement. Bearing sounded very dry when spinning. The support bushing is totally gone, no longer attached to the bracket. I found a place that can get me one cheap for tomorrow, big chain of all places (the kind staffed with 16 year old kids). No one else could though. Go figure. I was unable to record the sound, would not have been a good recording anyway.

Habger bearing support orientation, appears directional. Which way does it go?

noises gone!

Hanger bearing was the fix. No more noises. It had the oddest symptoms. Started suddenly, did not sound like it was coming from under the floor, more up in the front of the car. Started as a whine, ended as a growl. It was initially intermittant and only at high speed. Bumps and cold seemed to set it off. At the end it was contant.
