Does radiator need to be removed to replace fan shroud on W123?

Hi,

I have an 82 240D that needs the fan shroud to be replaced since it is cracked at the bottom of the shroud. It seems that I may have to remove the radiator to install the new shroud. Is that correct or is there an easier way to do it?

Thanks.

Best Regards,
Louis

Just pull the fan. You might want to loosen the alternator belt first though. There are clips on top and a slot on the bottom

i had to pull a shroud a few months ago and in my experience it did require removing the radiator. however, in your case, why not patch the shroud in place with epoxy, maybe fiberglass, etc.?

You don't have to....just pull the fan and it will slide right out....though I would suggest doing a 360 on front of the car....new belts, flush radiator, vacuum pump diaphragm check...etc..

Thanks for all the recommendations. How do I pull the fan? Are there instructions that I can follow that may be on the forum? Thanks for the help.

You need to remove the fan, not "pull" it.

It's just 4 10mm bolts. Use a closed end wrench so you don't round off the bolt heads. It's very tight - you might have to grind off a bit of the end of the wrench to get it on the bolt head. A real pain the first time, but gets easier with practice.

just look at the fan. it's pretty obvious. all you NEED to do are loosen and remove the 4 10mm bolts... there's no clutch on the 240, so it's pretty simple.
after the bolts are out, you should be able to wriggle the fan forward, and then lift out the shroud with the fan.
the 240 has a big spacer on the back of the fan, take it off also to give yourself even more room.

actually, you need to disconnect the fan, and spacer, then remove all with the shroud...
fairly difficult to remove the fan prior to taking the shroud off...

It's easy to replace the shroud as described above but a small piece of fiberglass cloth and some 5 minute epoxy resin in the syringes from the hardware store would also fix the crack.

Thanks everyone for the great recommendations and guidance. The current shroud is completely broken at the bottom and I already purchased a new one that I hope will help the car run cooler. Thanks again!
