99 E300 fuel delivery no start issue
This one has been tough. Changed out the fuel line between the heater and the filter housing preliminary screen and the primary screen and then found out the hard way that the screen does not come with an o-ring. I have one on it now.
Seems that whenever I take the line off from the fuel tank where it connects to the heater I don't get enough out to matter. The line shown all the way to the left in the picture will suck fuel up it when I try to start but then has times where there is nothing in the hose as shown in the pic. IIRC I should get quite a bit of fuel out of the supply line when it is not connected to the heater. I'm considering draining the tank and inspecting the tank screen. Car is showing 276k miles and has been run on homemade biod for the last 4 years. It is all gummy and nasty around the fill nozzle. Reason I hate to have to remove the screen is because the tank is about 3/4 full of customers homemade biod. I've got to prep my drum to drain it in. Thoughts?

I'd look for other air leaks first. All of your horseshoe clips are pushed in. Thats for removal. Pull the clips back (loose and floopy) and make sure everything is seated and prime again.
The line from the thermo to the prefilter will drain back approx half way whenever you stop cranking. Is normal. Make sure the SOV clicks open when the key hits pos #2. No click, no start. Check that the washer on top of the prefilter is providing enough downward pressure to create a seal on that oring. I've had to crimp it to get it to seal before. Always helps to prefill the prefilter chamber and cannister filter before priming. Homebrew: Tank screen could be clogged. Lift pump could be tired. SOV could be sticky.

I just had to reprime my 96 system after a masive air leak at the heater. I used my mighty-vac to suck the fuel in from the feed line. And then used it to suck it through the heat exchanger ( 'cause I thought it was fubar'd from prior owner/tech breaking part of the flange off). Glad Terry mentioned the 'drainback' as it still backs off and allows a bubble of air in the line.
The issue was the fuel line not being seated deeply enough in the heat exchanger.I've taken to using one or the other side of a rubber mallet to gently seat them and pop the clips out. You'll find it. |

Its a little hard to track all of your fuel lines in the pic. Should be per the pic attached. If the lines at the lift pump are reversed, the lift pump won't pull enough fuel up to fully prime everything.
Any air leak present ought ot be on the suction side of the lift pump. fuelflow.JPG (image)
