Flex Disk Failure 911

I am currently in Downtown Birmingham, AL with my 1987 w124.125 300D (actually 250D) en route to Detroit, MI.

My rear drive shaft flex disk is failing, aka turning into a birds nest.

I am going to stop here for the night and hit the parts stores in the morning, however, I am wondering if any of you in the area may have a spare you could sell me in case no one has any in stock.

I know this is a common part used in may models, so I am hopeful, however I need a backup, as I have to get back to Detroit ASAP.

My research shows that this car uses 202 410 1015

Thanks for reading. Joe M

If you can get to a Napa they might have one.

How are you planning on installing that without a lot of tools/jack stands???

I would not drive it any further at all, or much more damage will occur!

I'd also check the front disc!

Checking the EPC for your specific car, you are right about that part number, but EPC says any of these will work:
2024101015
2024101215
2024101315 if you have ASD

But here is the rub... I also looked up a U.S. spec 300D (124133) and it requires a different part. The image in EPC looks the same, but looking the same and being the same is not guaranteed. The US version of your car uses 1264100415. So perhaps that is compatible and perhaps it is easier to find in the U.S.

Good luck.

The car is parked safely.

Thank you for the information, I will check it in the morning. I dont have and ASD dif.

I may have a shop do the job for me, as I lack jack stands, however I have done this job 10 times and have tools.

The different part number for the 300D is likely because most of the diesels have a smaller flex disc/drive shaft yoke than the gas cars do.

If you need to use a shop use PTL Auto & Tire on Huffman road. The owners are friends of the family and do good work.

Things are not looking good for finding one today...Napa, Carquest, and the dealer are all looking at tomorrow as the soonest we could get one.

if the rear disc has given up then the front disc must also be gone - it goes out first.

The fornt looks like it was just replaced by the previous owner.

It looks like N. Birmingham truck and auto has the part, they have a lot of mercedes stuff. Lloyd at Birmingham Benz has been very helpful as well.

202 410 1015 Listed as Flexiable Joint it has a MSRP from the Mercedes Dealer of $92 each.
If you are a Mercedes Benz Club of America Member there could be a discount on that.
I would hit the parts places ASAP because they may not have any on the shelf and you might have to wait for one.
NAPA is another choice form the chain Part Stores.

I guess you will not be able do deal with the quality issue due to the need to get moving.

For general used MB parts check these guys

Edit: Just noticed you already are in contact with them. They still get my vote for a good place to shop.

A new flex disc would be best, but they might have a good used one. Plus, if you get time these guys have LOTS of used MB parts at good prices.

202... like C-class?

Is it possible to just bolt the two flanges together for emergency?

In an absolute total emergency, I suppose you could. But you won't be able to get the flanges to meet up, so there would be a tremendous amount of stress on the bolts.

You might be able to fab up a make shift flex joint out of a truck tread. I think that would be better than bolting flange to flange. A piece of thick plywood might work too to get you a few more miles down the road.

The amount of damage you risk causing would likely be more than the tow to get to a place to get it fixed.

There is something else no one has mentioned. In the Pic in Post #13 in the Center of the Drive Shaft is a Bushing that keeps the Flex Disc centered.

I am guessing if the Bushing is worn it puts more stress on the Flex Disc. If it is OK just put some grease in the center hole of it.

It's not really a bushing, it's a combination of a device to center the yoke to the drive shaft and a seal to keep moisture away from the driveshaft centering dowel. Here in SoCal with the lack of rain, I'm sure one could operate without the seal portion as long as the plastic centering sleeve is ok.... just, as you suggest, just pack with grease to keep the water at bay.

In the following image you can see the white plastic centering sleeve and the rubber seal.
