Free fuel - a perk of my job and driving a diesel

Truck came into the shop with coolant in the fuel, all was going to be dumped (about 100 gallons). Scored a full tank. No, I am not concerned about contamination. Coolant settled to the bottom, siphoned off the top. Not the worst looking fuel I have ever seen. I was on empty and did I mention it was FREE

This happens from time to time. Last time I took two steel drums full. Was a total pain to fill the car. This time I just settled for a fill up. Coworker took the rest for his furnace.

How did coolant end up in a fuel tank?

Probably some type of new injection system that gets the fuel close to the coolant for God knows what reason. Diesels these days are bastard-ified, Rube Goldberg, EPA compliant, trouble machines. When I see a Diesel vehicle on the side of the road, it is always one that was made in the late 90s to current. Same for the ones dumping black smoke all over the road. I saw a Cummins yesterday which had an obvious boost leak given the black smoke and the whooshing sound when the driver accelerated.

At least the fuel has an additive so it won`t freeze.

There could be some type of fuel heater that has a leak internally that could cause the coolant in the fuel.

It`s amazing the newer cars I see on the hwy to Santa Cruz from San Jose on a warm day sitting on the side of the road with the hoods up. and I go chugging right on by in my old MB`s or the old Datsun PU.

If it was ATF with diesel it would be a whole different story...

I have seen that plenty of times also driving from San Jose to Santa Cruz, also see it a lot out here in the valley and its not just autos, the big trucks are a mess with all the new EGR stuff and engine sensors.

Just don't get the fuel that has been contaminated by DEF the chemicals in it will ruin the injection system.
My boss had a driver put DEF in the I had to replace a IP on Detriot DD15 engine and now we have about 200gls of contaminated fuel that is only good for parts washing.

I was thinking the same but then I thought that it would have had to have been running for a long time for the coolant to collect back in the tank - if it was that I guess it would have well and truly buggered the whole injection system.

I'd think heating the fuel to 200+ would evaporate out the urea no?

Volvo / Mack engines use sleeves to seat the infectors into the head. Sleeves are open to coolant and sealed by a single oring. When this oring fails, coolant and fuel co-mingle. More often the sleeve leaks combustion gas into the fuel.causing hard starting, rough running etc.

If you take 17, I'm surprised you don't see more slammed up against a wall or wrapped around a tree. That's a road meant for slower, more confident cars...
