[QUOTE=Phil_F_NM;3133332]Drove out to Smile123's place today and tried charging the battery more then starting the car. No joy. The starter wouldn't turn over quickly so we figured it was a bad starter.
Went and picked up a starter from Autozone, swapped it into the car and after a few minutes of charging with jumper cables, the car roared to sputtering, shaking life. I figured the injectors were a bit clogged or after months of sitting it was just angry. ![]() ![]() ![]() I want to say 'Thank you, thank you, thank you....' to Phil for helping me out and save the car from going to the junk yard. Here Phil only used one line to describe how he try to start the car, in reality, he spent couple of hours trying to start the car with all different methods that everyone suggested. Finally he (not me) figured out it must be the starter, so we went to get a starter. By then it was almost 5 pm, I wanted to call for the day but he insisted in changing it. With only one jack that he has in his trunk and the jack I have that comes with the car, he went under the car and managed to swap it in just 50 minutes. When it came to one place he could reach he managed to make his own tool by extending it with a tube. He really knows a lot about cars and he is very persistent to resolve problems. I am looking forward for Phil to come again for the diesel purge and valve adjustment, and then later on the temperature gauge, odometer, AC, door lock, radio......all these were working fine before the junk yard swap the engine but now these are not working. Today I gave the car a quick bath and drove around. No more white smoke but the engine still shakes especially when I stopped in front of the traffic light. I am not worry, I know Phil and all other members can help me to restore this car step by step. |

Smile123: I think you need some transmission fluid since the car shudders at a stop.
As for working on the car, it has been challenging just a bit (nothing like fighting with my '78 300D and its former suspension woes) but overall I have enjoyed working on it. It's really a lovely machine and now I want to find one. Then I'll have to find a garage or a driveway... Phil Forrest
