I have been lurking and learning from you guys for some time now. A couple days ago I purchased an 82 300d.

It had been sitting for sometime - put some new tires on her, engine seems strong - starts to move when the turbo kicks in.

The steering is way loose, I read the adjustment posts to adjust, hoping that will help a bit, but it is way way way loose... scary over 35mph; I suspect this is what put the old girl in retirement to begin.

Here is a pic...

thanks

Welcome to the Forum and to the Club.

Yours looks like a twin to mine, now if you have black interior, they are. what year is yours?

If the Steering Box is to the end of the adjustments, then Iam not sure how to fix that besides finding a replacement box.

Check your suspention for wear, Upper Control arm Bushings & Ball Joint, lower BJ, Tie Rods/Drag Link, etc.... start prying and pushing with a Pry bar to see what is loose. If the Boots on the BJ`s are gone or the tie rods, for sure that is a problem to address.

What part of the Country are you?

Fist, welcome to the club.

The steering adjustment is the last thing you should do in fixing loose steering. Check all the other components first, because until you've got a tight system, the steering adjuster will do next to nothing and you run the risk of getting it too tight and damaging it. Inspect your steering coupler, tie rods, ball joints, bushings etc. first. Replace what needs replacing and then do your final adjustment at the steering box.

Excellent *advise.

Don't drive anywhere without getting it up on a rack and seeing why the steering is "scary."

Nice looking car - just change the fluids, belts, and hoses that may need changing out and enjoy - AFTER you address the steering issue(s)!

Then, fix what breaks as you drive and own.........that's it!
