E300D Door Light

Looking for some insight on this one.

The light under the drivers door was working fine, then one day it stopped working. I thought is was the bulb, but its something more. I took out the assembly and pluggled it into the passenger door plugs and it worked fine. I also tested the voltage on the drivers side connectors and it was zero and the same connection on the passenger's side was 13.5v.

I used contact cleaner on the contacts, but still no power on the contacts.

Since the bulb and housing work, the problem is somewhere else. The other three doors lights work, so I am curious as to what can work one day, then not work the next.

Thoughts?

The switches for the door (puddle) lights are mounted in the door jamb. For the driver's door there are two switches but I'm not certain which one it is. The switch could be simply stuck in (closed position).

The answer to this question depends on the year of the E300D, which will tell us if it is a W124 or a W210. Which is it, Pabster?

The drivers side puddle light comes on when other doors are open, but when its just the drivers side door open, it doesn't come on. I took off the door panel for a peak and the wires feed into the door jamb connector and the sensor must be on the other side, inside of the car.

I will get into it and have a peek soon and hopefully its a simple one to replace. Its a 1997 W210.

The W210 has a single switch that activates a complex relay or "module." It operates several things, not just the dome and puddle lamps. The front passenger door has a simpler circuit. Check the switch and its wiring first, report what you find.
