OM616 engine swap question

I'm looking at a 240D 4 speed on craigslist and the seller claims to have put in a newer engine in it and some other work.

This is the engine in the car. The black box looks like its for an automatic transmission car if I am not mistaken. That should be an easy fix to remove all of the useless linkages and vacuum stuff.

This is a 4 speed car I have also found that looks like its the original engine.

So, there should be no issue with the engine on top if I want to make it correct for a 4 speed car, correct?

The engine looks like a 82 or 83 with the Oil Seperator next to the Air Filter Housing.

Yeah I think the black box has a line running to the EGR Switch over Valve on the R/F inner fender. and also has something to do with shifting the Auto Trans.

If this 240 is a Manual Trans, yeah get rid of that stuff.

What year is this 240?

^^ What Charlie said. 240D manual 82 and 83 US version. It's got a manifold with a butterfly that messes with the egr. The black box has something to do with that- applies/controls vacuum to the egr at various throttle positions. Unless you really want to be PC, best to take all that garbage off and use an earlier manifold.

As you know...I know how to do that...

I have the same car, and the same butterfly manifold malarky going on. Thanks for posting this, thats a lot of crapola that can be removed and im glad to have been reminded. The linkage can be way simplified and a lot of bind points removed, mine is also converted to 4-speed and can stand to lose that black box as well.

The engine looks really clean on that pic. Is there any rust on the car? whats the mileage on it?

Get the intake and exhaust manifold from a 1980 240D. No EGR, No Oil Vapor Seperator., just a curved plastic pipe from the VC to the intake manifold. And there is no Butter Fly Flapper.

When you remove the Air Cleaner Housing, you will be amazed at the crap in there from the EGR and blow by vapors.

My 80 with almost 350k, is clean as a Whistle. just a little oily.

Use the Black Box behind the pass side kick panel install a Tachometer, Jumper a wire between to contacts and you will have it.

DIY tach for 240D w EGR- easy!

From the picture the engine sure is clean, hope the rest is as well.

Being an automatic, that should deduct $1000 off the price.

The second picture looks like it could be an 80 with the way the Vapor line curves under the Air Cleaner Housing.

It's not an autotragic, but apparently has had an automatics engine transplanted in.

OH good, now you are going to have to add $1000, the value just went up.

Well if the VCV on the IP is good, you have one to sell.
