W126 Owners - Keep a Fire Extinguisher In Your Car!!

For all W126 owners. You NEED a fire extinguisher in your car. A $20 investment could save your vehicle!

I experienced the need and use of my fire extinguisher today on my way home from work with the AC on. I pulled into a store parking lot while on my errands run and I noticed that there was a smell of burning leaves getting stronger. I thought at first someone was burning something outside so I opened the car door to see if in fact it was coming from outside. It was not. I smelt the air coming from the vents and it smelled like the burning leaves I had smelt before. As soon as I looked up, I saw smoke pouring out from under the cowl of the hood. I exclaimed a few choice words as I hurried to pop the hood, shut everything off in the car and get the fire extinguisher out of the trunk. I was initially thinking it was a fire in the fuse box or associated wiring but after looking under the brake booster, I saw the embers and smoke. I quickly dispatched the embers and thanked my lucky stars that it was not something more serious that I could not get to. I also thanked myself for buying and keeping a fire extinguisher in the car for this exact reason.

I vacuumed out all the leaves from this area not three months ago. Don't think that just because you cleaned them out, there won't be a problem! Luckily I was prepared.

i recommend a co2 extinguisher. that way, you can use it to stop a runaway engine without harming the engine.

Arrow Concur --- this needs to be an annual reminder

Last spring, I had ONE oak leaf down in there. Anyone remember this photo?

And here's my next project; a 1991 350SDL that had a bunch of leaves down in there which led to this:

Yes, I carry a fire extinguisher in my trunk.

Fire extinguishers

A fire extinguisher is a great idea for all cars, not just 126s. I carry mine on the floor in the back seat because a rear-ender could leave my trunk inaccessible. The first aid kit is back there for the same reason. Obviously those who need the back seat for other things including (gasp!) people may not be able to do what I do.

Although certainly better than nothing, the white powder extinguishers do make a mess. Many years ago I had the opportunity to use a powder extinguisher on an alcohol stove mishap in a sailboat on San Francisco Bay (out in the water, not tied to the dock!). The extinguisher put the fire out but we were cleaning up white powder for weeks afterwards.

CO2 is more expensive but doesn't leave a mess and is excellent for electrical and fuel fires. Note that an electrical fire may re-ignite if you don't quickly disconnect the power source. I still have a halon extinguisher but they are no longer available, I believe, because halon is an ozone-depleting chemical.

...
I carry a CO2 refillable cylinder with air chuck and blow gun in the trunk of my vehicle. I use it for HVAC work, for shield gas, and for cleaning drains. it fills my tires and I can invert it to blast a CO2 liquid shot on any fires.
Lowes used to carry them as a portable nail gun can. paint ball gun cylinders will also work. MUCH CHEAPER THAN A RATED CO2 FIRE EXTINGUISHER!!!

around $75
likely around $100 now, but it comes with adapters to fit onto standard soda CO2 tanks to refill it yourself. $20 fills it like 50 times...

The C02 extinguisher would have been a lot cleaner. I will look into one.

I have the front seat mounted fire extinguisher bracket from when I got the Euro seats. I wonder if I could reinstall it and expect my small fire extinguisher to fit. Great point about not being able to open the trunk.

Great you caught and were able to put before any real damage was done. I have always carried a CO2 extinguisher in my vehicle. When I first bought my '83 SD it amazed me the amount of leaves in that cove. I have cleaned them out (just noticed the removeable panel in front of the monovalve/aux pump) several times. Has anyone installed mesh screen over this area to lessen leaf buildup?

Beats me. Perhaps they wanted to prevent people from touching it and getting burnt?

On the W140 I believe it / they are mounted up front by the fans
