Would that be the little placard on the radiator support?

I would tend to agree with you on this. My 84 SD came with a new Sony XPLOD radio/CD player. The best part about it is that it has Bluetooth connect, which I've used extensively to stream music from my iPhone with Sirius/XM app.

My new (to me) 86 SDL has the original Becker Grand Prix radio in it, which is in pristine condition, just like the rest of the car. I'd really like to leave the original Becker in place, as it works just fine...just wish I could figure out a good way to somehow tether my phone for music playing (guess I should look into those cassette adapters).

BTW, my SD came with the original radio (uninstalled) and it's the same Becker that is pictured above. No knobs...only buttons and a small digital display.

Many / most aftermarket radios don't fit the styling of the interior, and I find many don't have well thought out controls.

I just checked mine and the radio type is not listed as an option.

Our 1981 300SD originally had the Becker Grand Prix 612. Yours likely had the same radio.

Totally agree. That's why I want to keep the Becker in the SDL.

The 1990 Becker radios are an easy fit into the older cars and have better power / sound than the early 80s ones.

You can get an adapter for your Becker that will allow an AUX cable to be connected. You can connect the AUX cable to the 3.5mm jack on your phone and listen to your music from your phone through the radio.

So something like this would work (from a 91, I believe)?

Factory Mercedes Benz 1991 300E Grand Prix Be 1480 Becker Radio Cassette | eBay

This vendor sells refurb units that have auxiliary inputs...that would solve my problem.

Refurbished Mercedes Becker Radio Be 1480 w Aux Input | eBay

I think the latest model 126 sedans had more speakers than my 86 SDL has, though (in the doors, for example). I'm not sure if that would make a difference or not.

i have used this in our Subaru with the MacIntosh Stereo. works very well and you don't have to worry about interference like with the wireless models:

Hmm... Wonder what happened to put a Blaupunkt radio + casette in Grampy's '82 300SD? I'd be surprised if he decided to change it himself. Then again, he might have preferred the "old fashioned" knobs and face to the buttons and digital display pictured previously.

Great suggestion. I am pretty sure my Becker 612 has that style of connector in the back. I might look into one of those adapters. How do you change the input for that? If my cassette player worked, I would consider one of those adapters but this one is much cleaner. I need to send my radio off to have it rebuilt. I do have a lot of cassettes that I would like to play.

The reason we like the older radios is because they are original. They look correct and usually function well. Becker is a pretty high-end stereo. Better than some chinese junk you will find at wal-mart. They may not play CDs, etc but most of the best music is available on cassette, anyway...
