I'm not going to go into detail with the whole transaction here but in short I met the POS in Dalton to show him the car and brought everything I had for it because he said he would most likely buy it. After driving it he immediately low-balled me ($1,600 and I was at $2,800). I went down to $2,500 and still too much for him. He claimed the car was for his son and he wanted to fix it up for him and give it to him because he was getting his license soon. I needed the money to buy a truck so I/we agreed on $2,150 which hurt me in the heart but knowing the car needed some things here and there I thought it was decent. I even threw in some new front brake pads/rotors I didn't have time to install.

In short please view my original listing here:

The Scammer's Craigslist Ad:

1987 MERCEDES BENZ 300 D TURBO DIESEL

My reply to his ad on Craigslist:

RE: 1987 MERCEDES BENZ 300 D TURBO DIESEL - $6400 (ROSWELL GA)

Please help me FLAG this POS Scammer who not only lied to me with his reasons of buying the car but is lying to all potential buyers who may be interested in this car. I should have NEVER sold it to him!
Flagged! Wow, what a lying sack of crap!!! I'm amazed and impressed that you caught him, and think your repost is great. It really goes to show that you're rolling the dice when dealing on Craigslist.

I'm selling my 84 300SD right now and have it listed on CL (as well as here). I REALLY hope someone from the forum buys it so I don't have to deal with people like this.

I hope karma catches up with this guy...

I do not want to be a devil's advocate but doesn't this kind of things happen all the time? It takes 2 to tango. Any transaction has a seller and a buyer. The seller agrees to sell at a price that he/she agrees to accept and the buyer agrees to pay. It is unfortunate that the seller was taken by the 'stories' but it is a fact of life that buyer will try to buy a item at the lowest possible price, isn't it call bargaining? The buyer would then flip it for a profit.

The description of the vehicle was dis-honest and over the top but I think all sellers do it to a certain extend. If he had kept it for 6 months then no one who ever know about it. I know at least one member here who flips cars and brags about it, btw, not Tyler. If some one falls for that car then that is too bad but I can bet my top $$$ that it will happen, may be not at the price he wants.

There is no honest price in this world, there is only an 'agreed' price. Get over it.

My $0.02.

A bunch of posts about this topic were deleted when the standalone thread was created, including the post where I copied & pasted the scammer's Craigslist post. Now the Craigslist ad is deleted too. The posts about odometer rollback legality were also deleted. It's not cool when list admins pull stuff like this.

All "maintained at local service facility, all service up to date, never seen snow, Mobile One [sic] every 4k, new brakes, none-smoker [sic], garaged..."

The seller puts the same BS into every listing.

Thanks gsxr!!

Thanks gsxr for keeping up with this stuff for me and showing an interest. I don't get much time to get on the forum often but have been keeping an eye on CL in Atlanta and too have found the SDL he listed along with an 84 300D. He's also using at least 3 different phone numbers: 404-993-0072, 404-993-0912- and 404-993-2575

I was extremely pissed off when I made my CL reply, hence the vulgar language I used and I apologize for that for everyone who had to read it, but not to whom I directed it to. Since he deleted his ad I deleted mine as well and if he reposts my 'old' car I will put another reply but promise to keep it clean.

I did put a 'WARNING' posting on Atlanta CL tonight about the other 2 Mercedes' he has listed since he took the one down for the '87 300D. Don't worry, I kept it clean this time. I think it's becoming a victim of the 'Craigslist Ghosting' though because it's not coming up when I search for it. But here's the link from where I was able to pull it up from my CL account: MERCEDES Buyers BEWARE: Atlanta Scammer/Dealer Lying about his cars!!!

I am trying to get this guy for the odometer tampering thing he's doing though. Does anyone know what I can do to prove this? The only proof I may be able to come up with is my mechanic I used may have his hard copies of the service records I had him do everytime he worked on the car showing the make/model/miles/and VIN#. I'm not sure if this will suffice as sufficient evidence. Only other thing is the picture I took of it rolling over 300k (the picture gsxr found and posted from my photobucket link) but there's no way to prove that was in the 'said car'.

I appreciate any input and if he does post my 'old' car back again, I would like any members local to the Atlanta area to show an interest in it, view it, get the VIN # and verify the odometer reads different (get a pic), pop the trunk open and look at the noticeable damage from the rear impact.

It seems the only real scam is his rolling back the odometer, which is illegal. You might report him to the authorities. I would think your testimony would be enough to convict.

If you lowered your price out of sympathy for his "new driver son", that is a type of welfare. Before giving welfare, you should check the facts and decide where that rates on your list of beneficiaries. My guess is you simply rationalized that to yourself as a reason for lowering the price because you wanted to get rid of the car. It would be hard to convict him for that. Maybe he truly has a son, and might have given the car to him but decided he could get big money for it instead. Ditto for the Beemer he lists.

I have flipped items before. I decided there were probably a lot of illiterates who couldn't spell "carburetor" so started searching for corruptions on ebay. I bought one on ebay for $25 and sold it for $170. I actually intended to use on my V-8, but found it was a marine version I couldn't use, so is that truly a flip? Kind of hard to sympathise with a seller who lists "Edlebrock" in the title while showing a carb with a clear label "Edelbrock". I got bored with this game, so you guys can try. There are always people who make money off people too lazy to realize full value. Just wait and you might find a family that inherited dad's pristine, vintage car and they list it for $100 because they don't appreciate it and are too lazy to research. I hate to think what my wife would do with my good stuff were I to pass prematurely.

Finally, I wonder what your true motivation is. One guess is seller's remorse, especially since you imagine he will sell "your car" for $5600 and net a nice profit that you could have made. My guess is he will have trouble unloading the car at what you sold it for, especially when potential buyers find he is clueless about it. Most buyers of these cars seek them out and are very knowledgeable. I would think a true flipper would have paid no more than $1000 for it.
