What Are the Odds - Something Annoying About the W123

Having owned four W123 diesels in the past several years, one thing I've found a bit annoying is the nasty stuff Mercedes chose to attach some of the interior trim, as well as some other small, but more important items.
Over the years I've had to scrape off the remnants of rotten foam adhesive in order to re-glue various bits of wood.
Well, yesterday I was in Virginia Beach, giving a friend a lift in my '82 240D, when we heard what sounded like some small object hitting the right side of the car. After a few seconds, my passenger asked me "Isn't here supposed to be a mirror over here?"
That's when I noticed the glass was gone from my right door mirror, leaving only a bit of white foam stuck to the mirror housing. I pulled off and parked on a side street so I could walk back and try to possibly find my mirror glass intact. But after several minutes I spotted a few small bits of broken mirror in the road. So we went on to our destination. Later after I got home, I discovered my right rear Michelin was now completely flat.
So this morning, I installed the spare and confirmed that a small shard of mirror had impaled the tire!
It had only gone about 5000 miles. I sure hope it's covered under Sam's Club's Road-Hazard tire warranty!

Happy Motoring, Mark

Is that, like, tire suicide?

I hate Sam's Club for tire service. No appointment available and slow service. Discount Tire price matches all including web and Sam's club. Go to the yard and buy another mirror.

More like accidentally stabbing one's-self in the foot!

I was able to get the white foam mirror backing off in one piece to use as a pattern for one of those cut-to-fit plastic mirror kits from Pep-Boys.
Unless someone here knows if the mirror glass is still availible separately for these cars.
I hope to find something better than sticky foam to attach it.

Happy Motoring, Mark

That`s the first I heard of a Mirror falling off like that. It lasted 30 years out in the elements so probably much longer than the MB designers anticipated.

The only one I saw on Pelican is for the left side.

Next time you are in the Yards, use a flat Wedge from the outside edge of the Mirror, and pry it off. the outer end is held on with a Ball/Socket and the inner part is a flat forked piece. Pop the Ball and pull it off.

The whole Mirror assy is around $35.

Unfortnately, there haven't been any W123s in my local yards lately. But I'll keep looking if a new OE replacement glass is NA.
I actually have a spare W123 passenger mirror. But it's a power-mirror for my TD, and the glass isn't that great. Certainly not good enough to try and pop it loose to stick on the 240D.

My nearby Sam's Club has treated me OK for tires, including when they had to replace a damaged pair for another car.
I got the four Michelin Xs on my 240D for $300 total, including road-hazard. About the same as some other stores wanted for el-cheapo tires!
Meanwhile, there's no rush, as I mounted a spare matching buntd and Michelin on the car until I can check with Sam's.

It's worse now --- My 2003 Saab 9-3 (good riddance!) mirror glass fell off and had a black rubber-ish/glue-ish/foam-ish stuff holding it on got tired and decided to take a nap. FWIW, the glass didn't smash and I was able to pick it back up. I scraped off the old stuff and used some epoxy to put it back in.
