Three cans of oven cleaner later I got about 95% of the crud out. I did not, however, got to the extreme you did on polishing the outside. I can get to that later - much, much later. The EGR delete is now very high on my priority list though.

Also like you, i got this done in time for the cold front coming in tomorrow. It sure is nice to see the glow indicator light working again.
That's great! I cannot fathom replacing glow plugs on this engine without having a clear path. Now I did cheat a little - I installed mine when the head was sitting on my workbench.

I didn't try oven cleaner yet, my spare set of intakes is soaking in diesel. Yes, they do get full. I too want to fabricate a good looking EGR delete, I am leaving the ALDA out for now.

Thank you Sir. The whole process has been wrought with starts and stops. The end is in sight!

Got home at a reasonable time this evening, threw on my dirty coveralls and got my exhaust-turbo interface all reconnected (it was easier than I thought it would be). Also cleaned and reinstalled the exhaust hanger bracket (located just forward of the muffler). My aim is to work at least 30 minutes each day on something untill I can put the key in this and see if all my work was done right.

Hi Boys and Girls out there is Internet Land !

I got off work at noon today (cause I went in at 0330 to update/patch/reboot all 26 of my Media Gateways) - so I was home in plenty of time to work on Klaus for a few hours. Got allot done; Assembled and installed the brand new belt tensioner (actually cleaned the old pinion and assembled the new spring and piston to it, got it attached to the engine, then later discovered that I had also purchased a new MB pinion - so it all came apart and was put back together with all new parts), installed the water pump pulley (the timing indicator was not positioned correctly - so it was scraping the water pump pulley, it's all fixed now), cleaned, polished and installed the fuel filter assembly (this took FOREVER - WVO really had gummed this up, soaking in diesel fuel, oven cleaner, break free, nothing would clean it totally. Finally just used the angle grinder with the brass wire brush for the bulk of it, a small pick and pipe brush for the rest), connected all fuel lines to fuel filter assembly, and started routing and re-routing all the cables and lines.

I’m getting to the bottom of my pile of bolts, nuts and fasteners, am finding that some are missing, so it’s off to the hardware store tomorrow to get a few that I know I need (there will probably be many trips like this as I find I’ve lost or incorrectly installed fasteners elsewhere).

Was eyeing the heater core return hose (the one that connects to the back of the head, on the driver’s side) – I’m worried because it looks like I should have hooked that one up before I installed the intake manifold. We shall see.

So here’s some new photos……

Front view of the engine – all looking nice and clean. Too bad the block is all cruddy and crusted over with hardened WVO residue. I don’t know if I’ll ever get that junk off of there.

Passenger side view, here you can see the polished thermostat cover (who cares it if don’t run – it looks good, don’t it?)

UPDATE - NEWS FLASH !

Klause is once again running. He started this morning after 6 weeks of trying (it was 6 weeks ago that I finally got it all back together, but he would not start). JJ and I took him for a drive around the block and learned that there is another problem we need to figure out. But for now, everyone is happy - happy -happy!

Here's the video;

Klause first START! - YouTube

I'll keep ya'll in the loop, and thank you to everyone who has helped me!

Well - here's sort of a book-end to my story. Klause is now running (still has some small problems, like the turbo does not engage) - but the head replacement is finished. I just took him to the inspection station and he passed;

Soon I'll be starting to work on my other 1987 w124 project, my wifes 300TDt named Spouse !

Great news! As to the turbo issue, try disconnecting the wire to the over-pressure sensor on the driver's side of the intake manifold (27 mm hex about an inch deep). If that is clogged it could be grounding the connector and thus preventing the injection pump from allowing you your extra juice needed to kick in the turbo.

Ahh, that sounds easy. I will give that a try too. I don't remember if I pulled that part out when I was soaking the intake in diesel to get all of the bio-tar out. Hope I didn't ruin this sensor! I drove Klause to work today, feel good!!
