I saw an 84 300SD for sale locally by a dealer (reputable guy, I bought a 97 Civic from him a few years back). About 185k miles, Texas car, no rust, everything works except AC, overall nice condition. Don't really need another car....but might, depending what I find out about my 92 300D....hoping it's "only" (gasp, gasp, choke, choke) a head gasket.

What's a reasonable price?

We paid $1800 for our one 300SD. It was a RUSTY piece but the engine/transmission were recently rebuilt. I patched up all the rust spots on it.

I would say the SD would be worth 2-4k at the top end. At 30+ years almost the suspension is probably worn and needs re-done.

Tyler sold a nice one with tired paint on here a couple of years back for $1200, interior mint and the miles were about like that one.

I would say in most cases around $2500. Depends on what has been done and what it needs.

For $3500 I would expect something really nice and only needing small stuff.

I paid $400 for my 84 300D a few years ago. I bought it for the engine, but ended up fixing it (cracked lower control arm bracket). My son drives it now and it looks fine. The prior owner was fairly clueless. It had 1 ft of water in both sides of the trunk and the interior was mildewed and smelly. I un-clogged the drains and cleaned leaves out of the trunk channels so no more leaks. Fortunately, found no rust. The interior cleaned up fine with soap and water, and no more smell. Sometimes you see cars on craigslist were the owner was too lazy to even sweep off the leaves before taking photos. Those can be an opportunity.

I'm trying to sell mine right now, and am down to $5,900. I've had a couple of offers for less, which I've turned down. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be much of a market for these right now, which his good for you if you're buying (and bad for me, as the seller). Mine has had a lot of verifiable work and is in excellent shape, despite having 202K on the odometer.

Dead A/C means much more than that... all the vacuum system is probably dead too. Budget $1000 to fix that. Do not buy into the 'just needs a charge' BS. But you are probably familiar with that.

No rust should be good in your area. Is the 185k real or is the odometer dead? Front end? Tires? ~$1500 there. Timing chain, injectors, time the IP, oil leaks...Sounds like a $1000 car to me, $1750 tops if the interior is really clean along with the paint. Dealer bought it from an auction cheap. Just depends how much time you want to spend getting it into safe driving shape.

I could see myself paying $6000 for a 300SD if the paint was fantastic along with the interior and mechanicals. Basically a zero issue, turn key car. Too much newer stuff around for that money which have better climate systems, easier to repair, and similar fuel economy if the $6000 car has issues.

Mine looks like **** on the exterior, no cancer... Texas since new. It has new tyres, new front end, Bil HDs all around, Klima Kit Sanden conversion (fully working HVAC), good tint, Monarks, block heater I just installed, turbocharger drain resealed, vac lock system works, factory 2.88:1 diff, four reman calipers with new rotors plus master cyl, and I doubt I could recoup $3k from it even with the planets aligned. Not like it matters, not for sale anyway.

In my area $2500-$3k is about normal. I paid $2300 for mine, and it was about what
most of the ones I saw for sale were going for.

If you base your purchase price on what's available, there are some decent ones on Craigslist in New England right now. Western MA and Worcester area have a couple of interesting vehicles. There's an '83 in NH that appears to be worth looking at. Texas car, no rust, "Never been through winter." Prices are up a bit this month. There aren't any cars below $1k and there's a $9000 asking price on a wagon the seller describes as restored. Lotsa cars with Veggie oil kits, too.

I bought my 84SD back around 2000 with 270K for $2500. no rust or accident damage.

The prices are all over the place, saw a local one. a 81 that had the lower Control arm bracket broken off where it is welded to the Frame. guy was asking $900. Don`t remember mileage or condition though.

I would guess back East in the Salt Belt regions where there is a lot of rust and other corrosion problems, a Rust Free example like we have here "Out West" would command a higher price in those places.

It all boils down to:

This common line I read in adds, "Easy Fix", well if it is such an easy fix, why don`t you fix the damd thing? Usually the Easy Fix is a high dollar fix.

This 84 300SD is 29 yrs old and will probably have several easy fixes pop up you weren't aware of.
