1997 E300d. P0400 code. Fix or just EGR delete?

Hi all. Have a om606 non turbo. Finally threw a p0400 EGR code and wondering whether to leave stock and fix, or just delete EGR. If so, which has been people's best technique- the resistors/diode electronic fix, or more mechanical with safety wire. Fortunately no inspections here.
Thanks all.

I have the same car, and the '97 is a problematic year as far as EGR deletion is concerned. The only technique I have discovered that will not trigger a check engine light is to block the exhaust and provide filtered air to the EGR valve instead of exhaust. The sensor on top of the valve needs air flowing by. Not sure if this would address your 400 code, but it might. I have not yet done this to my car as in VA the emissions stuff must appear stock, even though our inspections do not check emissions.

If the 1997 EGR must see flow (my 1996 does not) you can re-plumb the input to the air filter box or you can install a small filter (lawn mower, motorcycle, etc.) at the input. There will be airflow to keep the electronics happy but it will be clean air rather than exhaust.

Once that is done, remove and clean the intake manifold and associated plumbing of all accumulated carbon.

Thanks. Any pics or better movies on intake removal.
Looks like a lot of stuff going on, and I hate breaking stuff.

I blocked off the EGR valve. Made a template with aluminum from Home Depot Gutter flashing. It was a cheap solution and the car didn't give a code.

I know others rigged up something more than this, but I didn't need to.
