2005 E320 CDI blown turbo

I need a new center section for the turbo on my car. The wheels have about 1/4 inch play. I looked into buying one and nobody could find the part to rebuild it. It has a garret 23V turbo V for variable valve. Was a similar turbo mounted in a different car?

GARRETT turbos for Mercedes Benz passenger cars and vans - Applications - TurboMaster
This is the best source for turbo info I have found to date, if you look up the main menu you can look around at the different makes, or search the various part numbers etc.

The Bearing Housing complete with both Turbine and Compressor Wheels assembled is called a Cartridge Assembly.

If either of the Wheels especially the Compressor Wheel have rubbed on the Housing and scored the outer Housing up you might consider either a completely rebuilt Turbo or a used one.

Before installing anything new it is important to find what caused the failure to begin with.

A friend of mine just had a sprinter come into the shop with a blown turbo. He said the nozzle actuator had frozen into the "closed" position and was over speeding the turbo.

That web link just confirmed that Garret does not sell cartridge assembly for VNT. A local turbo rebuilder could not find it either. We were talking about installing a 28 non Variable turbo with ball bearings and other improvements. But the hard part is tuning the computer to accept this. 180k miles.

You need a software writer like malone tuning or custom spooling (search them out) it is possible, but someone that knows the back ground...
Yes there will be turbo lag, it will drive differently. That is one expensive turbo on your car! Maybe search around for used ones.
I would be more inclined to mount a cheaper VNT turbo from a different engine, if you talk with a knowledgable turbo builder they can tell you what housings will fit what cartridges etc, yes it can be done if there are interchanging parts (most likely). I am just learning about all this stuff on old T3 turbos for the 617 and a Renault engine (share the same turbo types)
