603 turbo motor high pitched roar little power
Hi guys
My 603A is exhibiting a strange behavior. When I accelerate it roars and produces little power. This roaring will continue throughout various speeds as long as I am accelerating. I have had many MB turbo diesels so i am familiar with the sound it should make. If while cruising I take it out of gear and rev the engine the roar is still there so It can't be transmission related. It will every now and then run as it should relitively quiet, powerful and no roar. Do you think it it turbo related? This is a new factory turbo. I have tested the turbo for play and freedom of movement. All seemed good. Suggestions? Thanks Mark

Sounds more like the cooling fan than the turbo, turbos dont really roar but the cooling fan does make a roar especially now in summer, and then the roar disappears when the coolant temp goes down and the viscous clutch disengages.

But this is when I first start up. So the temperature is already cool. I don't think this is a fan issue. And the fan would not cause the low power issue.

mbonly,
I stand corrected. You were right. I swapped out my fan with the one I had from my old 124 car. Noise is gone. Often the simplest things..... Thanks for the insight. Mark
